AI Image Compression — How Neural Networks Shrink Photos

Traditional compression (JPEG, WebP) uses math formulas designed by engineers in the 1990s. AI compression uses neural networks that learned how to compress by studying millions of images. Here is how it works in plain language.

How traditional compression works

JPEG breaks an image into 8x8 pixel blocks, converts colour data to frequency data (using a math operation called DCT), and throws away the frequencies your eye is least sensitive to. It is clever engineering, but it follows fixed rules that cannot adapt to what is in the image.

How AI compression is different

AI compression uses an autoencoder — a neural network with two halves. The encoder learns to squeeze an image into a tiny representation (the latent space). The decoder learns to reconstruct the image from that tiny representation. The network trains on millions of images until it gets good at preserving what matters and discarding what does not.

The key advantage: AI models can understand content. They know a face needs to look sharp, a sky can be approximated smoothly, and text edges need to stay crisp. JPEG treats all 8x8 blocks the same regardless of content.

Current state in 2026

Google, Meta, and Apple are all developing AI compression codecs. Some studies show 30-50% smaller files than JPEG at the same visual quality. But the technology is not in mainstream browsers yet — encoding is slow (seconds per image vs milliseconds for JPEG) and decoder support is limited.

AVIF uses some ideas from machine learning but is not fully AI-driven. True neural compression formats like JPEG AI (ISO standard) are still in development.

For now, traditional codecs (WebP, AVIF) are the practical choice. But within 2-3 years, AI compression will likely become standard in browsers and operating systems.
