HEIC Files Won\'t Open on Windows? Here\'s the Fix
You plugged in your iPhone, copied photos to your PC, and Windows says it cannot open them. The files end in .heic and nothing works. Here are three free solutions.
Why Windows cannot open HEIC
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple\'s default photo format since iOS 11. Windows does not include HEIC support out of the box. Microsoft offers a free HEIF Image Extensions codec in the Microsoft Store, but it does not always work and requires a separate paid HEVC codec for some files.
Fix 1: Convert online with MiniPx
Open MiniPx in any browser, switch to HEIC mode, drop your .heic files in, and download them as JPG. No software to install, no codec issues. Works on any Windows version.
Fix 2: Install the free Microsoft codec
Open Microsoft Store → search for "HEIF Image Extensions" → install. This lets Windows Photos and some apps open HEIC files. However, some HEIC files also need the HEVC Video Extensions codec, which Microsoft charges for.
Fix 3: Change iPhone settings
Prevent the problem at the source. On your iPhone: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. This makes the camera save as JPEG instead of HEIC. Files will be larger but universally compatible.
For the fastest solution with no installs, MiniPx HEIC converter handles single files and batches directly in your browser.
