A PNG keeps every pixel and can carry transparency; a JPG discards detail to get small and cannot carry transparency at all. Both facts decide whether this conversion helps you. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
Transparent PNGs get a white background
JPEG has no alpha channel, so MiniPx paints white behind the image before encoding. A logo with a see-through background comes out as a logo on white. If the file must stay transparent, keep PNG or use PNG to WebP, which preserves alpha.
Screenshots and text do worse than photos
JPEG is built for continuous-tone photographs. Hard edges, small text and flat colour areas pick up faint ringing around the edges, and the lower the quality setting, the more visible it gets. The Smart preset is the default on this page; if the PNG is a screenshot or a scan of text, switch to Gentle, which uses a higher quality. The table below shows what each kind of file actually did.
One-way: the PNG detail is not recoverable
Converting back to PNG later gives you a PNG of the already-lossy JPG, not the original. Keep the source PNG. The JPG also drops any PNG text chunks and other metadata; the output carries none of it.
When JPG is the right call
Choose JPG for photographs and for anything that must fit an upload limit, because a photographic PNG is usually far larger than the same picture as a JPG. Keep PNG for logos, line art, screenshots with small text, and anything with transparency. If a form accepts only JPG, convert; if you are only unsure, convert a copy and compare the two with the before and after slider on the result card.
Check the JPG against the PNG before you save
Each row shows the original size, the new size and the change, plus the output dimensions. If the JPG came out larger than the PNG, which can happen with tiny flat graphics, the row says so in amber and you can keep the PNG. Batches download as a ZIP.
