Convert WebP to JPG — Free, Fast & Private
WebP is a modern image format that produces smaller files, but not every application supports it yet. When you download images from websites, they often come in WebP format — and you may find they cannot be opened in older photo editors, uploaded to certain platforms, or attached to emails that require JPEG.
This is especially frustrating when Chrome saves images as WebP by default. You right-click, save an image, and end up with a .webp file that your software cannot handle. MiniPx solves this instantly — upload the WebP file, select JPEG output, and download a universally compatible JPG in seconds.
MiniPx converts WebP to JPG entirely in your browser. No uploading to servers, no waiting for processing, no file size limits. Unlike online converters that require you to upload your images to their servers, MiniPx keeps everything private and local.
You can batch convert multiple WebP files at once. This is particularly useful when you have downloaded a set of images from a website and need them all in JPEG format for editing, printing, sharing on social media, or uploading to platforms that do not accept WebP.
For best quality, use the Gentle preset (82%) when converting WebP to JPEG. Since WebP is already a compressed format, re-encoding at too low a quality can introduce visible artifacts. The Gentle preset preserves maximum detail while still producing reasonable file sizes.
Why Chrome downloads images as WebP
When you right-click an image in Chrome and select "Save image as," Chrome saves it in the format the website serves. Most modern websites use WebP because it reduces page load times by 25-35% compared to JPEG. You cannot change this behaviour in Chrome settings — the website decides the format, not the browser.
This affects Edge and Firefox too, since websites detect browser support and serve WebP to any compatible browser. The result: your Downloads folder fills up with .webp files that older applications cannot open. MiniPx batch converts them all to JPEG in one step.
WebP to JPG vs WebP to PNG — which format to convert to
Convert to JPG when you have photographs or images without transparency. JPEG produces smaller files and works with every application on every device. Convert to PNG when the image has a transparent background (logos, icons, overlays) or when you need pixel-perfect lossless quality for further editing.
For photos saved from websites, JPG is almost always the right choice. The file will be smaller, compatible with everything, and visually identical to the WebP version at Gentle quality.
Quality settings explained
MiniPx offers three compression presets when converting WebP to JPEG. Gentle (82%) preserves maximum detail — use this when image quality matters (photography, print). Smart (65%) balances quality and size — good for web uploads and social media. Tiny (40%) creates the smallest files — use when you need to meet a file size limit, like the 200KB target for documents or the 100KB target for form uploads.
Converting WebP to JPG on different platforms
Windows: Open minipx.com in Chrome or Edge. Drag .webp files from your Downloads folder directly into MiniPx. Select JPEG format, download. The converted JPGs open in any Windows application including Paint, Photos, and Word.
Mac: macOS Preview can open WebP files since Monterey. But for batch conversion of many files, MiniPx is faster — drop them all at once. If you need to compress the JPEGs further afterwards, MiniPx handles that too.
Mobile: Works in Safari (iPhone) and Chrome (Android). Tap the upload area, select WebP files from Photos or Files, and save the converted JPEG back to your camera roll. No app required.
