AI Background Removal — Free, Fast & Private
AI background removal used to require uploading your photo to a cloud service that charged per API call, watermarked free output, or quietly stored your image for training. MiniPx changes that by running the entire AI pipeline in your browser via WebGPU. The model downloads once and caches; subsequent removals are 1-5 seconds and require no internet.
Two models ship, and you pick between them in the tool. Instant is MediaPipe selfie segmentation — a 250 KB download, tuned for people and faces, effectively no wait. Better quality is RMBG-1.4, Bria's open segmentation model, quantised to 44 MB and run through ONNX Runtime Web; it handles objects, animals, and products as well as people. A third "max quality" tier was trialled and pulled: the model needed around 300 MB of working memory and ran out of memory on ordinary laptops and phones, so 44 MB is genuinely the ceiling here rather than a paywall. Both run on any device with WebGPU support — Chrome and Edge 113+, Safari 17.4+, Firefox 121+ — and fall back to WebAssembly elsewhere.
Why this matters: your image stays private (verifiable in DevTools), there are no per-call API fees, and the free tier includes 2 AI runs shared across all three AI tools before a cooldown starts. For Pro workflows the $3.24/mo plan gives unlimited AI runs, unlocks 4096px output, removes the watermark, and adds the background-compose colour palette for marketplace listings.
