The most useful thing to know about an Indian passport photograph is that the ordinary route does not use one. The General Advisory for Passport Applicants, published by the Ministry of External Affairs on passportindia.gov.in, walks through the online application and then tells you to visit the Passport Seva Kendra with your original documents, adding in the same breath that a photograph is not required. The image printed in the book is captured at the counter during your appointment. A physical photograph appears in that advisory only for manual submission at a Passport Office, and there it is described as a recent colour photograph of 4.5 cm by 3.5 cm on a white background. That is the same 45 by 35 millimetres this page builds to, quoted height first. So treat the 413 by 531 pixel export as what it is: correct for the offline form, correct for the many visa applications that reuse the Indian passport shape, and a fair way to check your framing before you sit down in front of the centre camera.
Buying a strip of studio prints for a Seva Kendra appointment that will never ask for them is the commonest wasted step, and it is worth checking which track you are on before you spend anything. If you do need the file, the pinch is bytes rather than geometry. At 413 by 531 pixels a default-quality JPEG lands well past 100 kilobytes, and the recorded window has a 10 kilobyte floor as well, so a file crushed until the skin goes soft can be refused just as a fat one can. The head band is the other quiet trap: 70 to 80 per cent leaves only a few millimetres of clearance above the hair, and a comfortable portrait crop with generous shoulders sits under the minimum while looking like a perfectly good picture. One more thing about the advisory worth knowing, since it saves an evening of scanning: it describes uploading your supporting documents through the portal as optional, with the originals and their photocopies carried to the centre instead. Across the five Indian documents covered on this site the byte allowances vary more than the geometry does, running from a 4 kilobyte floor on Aadhaar and PAN up to a 200 kilobyte ceiling on the licence and the OCI card, so a file prepared for one Indian form is not automatically the right weight for the next.
