Of the five Indian documents covered here, the driving licence is the one you genuinely upload yourself. Parivahan Sewa's own help material describes an Upload Photograph and Signature step reached from the Upload Documents menu inside the licence application, which is a different animal from the passport and Aadhaar routes where the picture is taken for you. The specification behind it is stricter than the passport in the one place people do not check. Sarathi's photo and signature sheet asks for 420 by 525 pixels and a file between 10 and 20 kilobytes, and 20 kilobytes is a tenth of the ceiling this page worked to until it was read properly. A file sized for the passport route is roughly five times too heavy, and the portal refuses it at the document step, which reads to most people as a broken website rather than an oversized photograph. The same sheet also prints two frames that do not agree with each other, 35 by 45 millimetres alongside 1.4 by 1.75 inches, so this page offers the upload and the printed photograph as separate routes rather than pretending one file satisfies both.
The India Driving Licence photo is 35.56×44.45 mm on plain white in print, and 420×525 px where the India form wants an upload. Ministry of Road Transport & Highways puts the head at 70–80% of the height, chin to crown, and the eyes at 60–70% up from the bottom edge.

The recurring problem is cross-contamination between fields. A licence application is one of several uploads you make in the same sitting, each with its own limits, and a file sized for one field ends up in another. Check the ceiling printed beside the box you are actually filling rather than assuming the one you met last. There is also an honesty note owed here: Parivahan's pages are rendered by script and were not readable when this copy was written on 23 August 2026, so the pixel target and byte window shown above come from this tool's own specification rather than from a figure we could read on a transport-ministry page. Several third-party resizers circulate a much tighter figure. If the portal states limits on screen, those beat everything on this page. Beyond that the constraints are the ordinary 35 by 45 ones: both ears showing, no headgear other than religious, and a head band that a relaxed portrait crop will undershoot. Remember too that the licence application treats your picture and your handwritten signature as two separate uploads reached from the same menu, each with its own box and its own limit, so finishing one does not mean the other is done.
