MiniPx vs remove.bg — Free, Fast & Private
remove.bg pioneered cloud-based AI background removal. It is excellent, fast, and the de-facto integration for many design tools. MiniPx is the on-device alternative that ships the same category of AI model (RMBG-1.4, open weights from Bria) but runs it entirely in your browser via WebGPU.
Privacy. The biggest practical difference. remove.bg uploads your image to their servers for processing. For most photos this is fine — but for ID documents, client work under NDA, internal product prototypes, or anything sensitive, the upload is a hard no. MiniPx never leaves your browser. Verify in DevTools Network tab.
Cost. remove.bg is free for low-res previews and $0.20/image for HD output (volume discounts available). MiniPx is free for 1080p HD output with a small watermark; Pro tier ($3.24/mo or $59 lifetime) removes the watermark and unlocks 4K output. At any meaningful volume MiniPx Pro is dramatically cheaper.
Quality. Comparable for portraits, products, and most everyday photos. RMBG-1.4 handles hair and translucent edges well. remove.bg sometimes edges ahead on extremely complex subjects (frizzy hair, mesh fabric, semi-transparent objects). The gap is closing as open models improve.
Latency. First use: MiniPx downloads a 44 MB model on the Better-quality tier, or 250 KB on the Instant tier (one-time, cached afterwards); remove.bg uploads your image (depends on size + connection). After first load: MiniPx is faster because there is no network round-trip — 1-5 seconds locally.
