Privacy and where your photo goes
This is the biggest architectural difference, by default. Photoroom uploads your photo to their servers for AI processing. Their privacy policy describes industry-standard handling, but the photos do briefly live on remote infrastructure. MiniPx runs the AI model in your browser by default — your photo never enters a network request, unless you are a Pro subscriber who switches on Cloud HD for that run, which uploads the one photo and deletes it when the run finishes. For sensitive content (ID photos, unreleased products, NDA work, family pictures, medical images), the free, always-on-device path is what matters.
Quality of the cutout
Photoroom uses proprietary in-house models tuned for product photos and portraits — generally excellent quality. MiniPx's HD tier uses RMBG-1.4, an open-source model also very strong on portraits and products, and Cloud HD — the Pro server option — runs the heavier BiRefNet-HR matting model for the hard cases. For typical inputs (a clear subject on a clean background), both produce indistinguishable results. For pathological cases (very fine hair, transparent objects like glass, complex multi-subject scenes), Photoroom's in-house models sometimes pull slightly ahead — they have more training data and ongoing tuning.
Features beyond cutout
Photoroom is a full editor — backgrounds, retouching, magic eraser, batch templates, brand kits. If you want a one-stop image studio for an e-commerce team, Photoroom delivers that polish. MiniPx focuses on a narrower scope: cutout + compression + format conversion + watermarking + responsive sets. It pairs with whatever editor you already use (Figma, Photoshop, Canva) rather than trying to replace them. That gap narrowed with Cloud HD: MiniPx Pro now covers retouching-class work too — an AI photo enhancer, an object remover (the magic-eraser job), and restoration and colorization for old photos — run on our server for that one photo and deleted when the run finishes.

Photoroom's free tier limits high-resolution downloads and applies watermarks on some outputs. Photoroom Pro is $9.99/month (~$120/year). MiniPx free includes 2 AI runs in total, shared across background removal, AI upscaling, and passport photos, at 1080×1080 with a small watermark; after that you either upgrade or wait 60 minutes, and the wait grows by 30 minutes each time you run the counter down again, capped at 24 hours. Compression, conversion, resize, crop, and PDF tools stay free and unlimited. MiniPx Pro is $3.24 for the first month or $29 for the first year on the launch promo until Nov 30, 2026 ($4.99/month and $39/year at list), and adds unlimited AI runs, 4K cutouts, unlimited batch, responsive sets, multi-format, custom rename, and saved presets across the entire product (not just BG removal).
When to pick which
