Restoration is reconstruction, and this page is honest about what that means. The model behind it, RestoreFormer++, has learned what sharp human faces look like, and it uses that knowledge to rebuild the detail your photo has lost — the catchlight in an eye, the texture of hair, the edge of a jaw. That power is exactly why this tool runs an identity check on every face it restores: the rebuilt face is compared against your original with a face-recognition model, and if the two have drifted apart, the run is refused and nothing is charged. A restoration tool that can invent a plausible stranger should have to prove it did not, every single time.
It is built around faces, and it says so instead of quietly disappointing you. A photo with no findable face — a landscape, a building, a document — is declined rather than processed into something barely different. For photos without people, the upscaler is the right tool, and it runs entirely on your own device. For old photos of people it is the other way round: restore here first, then enlarge there.
This is one of the few MiniPx tools that runs on a server, and the page treats that as a disclosure, not a footnote. Almost every tool on this site — the background remover, the compressors, the crop tool — processes your image on your own device, and your file never leaves your browser. Restoration is different because the model is simply too large to ship to a browser. So your photo is uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed once, and deleted within 24 hours of completion, with the input gone before your download link is even issued. It is never used to train anything, ours or anyone else’s.
Old prints deserve a little preparation, and a sensible order. Scan at 600 DPI if you can, and crop the scanner-bed border with the crop tool on your own device. Then work in this order: restore the faces here, add colour with the colorizer if the photo is black-and-white, and enlarge last with the upscaler. Each step feeds the next clean detail to work with, and only the first two involve an upload.
