How it works

  2. Our GPU restores the faces and checks each one against your original. If the result drifts too far from the person in your photo, the run is refused rather than handing back an invented face — and you are not charged.
  3. Download the restored PNG, still monochrome, at the same resolution. Chaining the optional colorize step makes it an HD run instead.

A monochrome photograph is not a colour photograph with the colour taken away. It was made that way, and everything it has to say is said in tone: the separation between a dark coat and a darker doorway, the gradation across a cheek, the point where a highlight goes to paper white and stops carrying information altogether. That is why age hurts a black-and-white print in a particular way. As it fades, the mid-tones compress towards each other, and the structure that made a face readable — the small differences between the shadow under a brow and the shadow beside a nose — flattens into a single grey. Nothing is missing, exactly. It has simply all become the same value.

Face restoration does not need colour, because it is rebuilding structure. RestoreFormer++ works from the geometry of a face: where the eyes sit, how the lids cut across them, where hair meets forehead. All of that is present in a monochrome image, so a well-scanned black-and-white portrait restores every bit as well as a colour one — often better, because monochrome prints of that era were frequently made from larger negatives. The result comes back as a PNG at exactly the resolution you uploaded, in the same monochrome tonality it went in with, faces rebuilt and each one compared against your original before anything is returned. A print the model cannot locate a face in is declined rather than processed, and a declined attempt is not charged. Read the tone before you correct it, because some of it is not damage. A warm sepia cast is very often deliberate: toning a print converted its silver into a more stable compound, and that chemistry is part of the reason the photograph survived long enough for you to hold it. Correcting it to neutral grey is a choice about presentation, not a repair. The blue metallic sheen you sometimes see across the darkest areas is silver mirroring, a physical change in the print surface that no restoration model touches; angle and diffuse lighting when you copy the print are what reduce it. And scan in colour rather than greyscale — the detail on the scanning page explains why. Real physical damage, the tears and stains, belongs with the scratch remover and its brush, not with this model.

Colour stays an explicit decision, and the upload stays short-lived. If you want a colourised interpretation as well, the combined restore and colorize run does both in one pass and counts as an HD run, and the standalone colorizer handles a photograph that is already sharp enough. Whichever you use, the colour is plausible rather than verified — nobody knows what that dress actually was. As for the file: restoration is Cloud HD, our Pro-only, opt-in server-side feature set. Your scan is encrypted in transit, uploaded to our server for that run and deleted when the run finishes, and in all cases within 24 hours, processed in the United States on Cloudflare R2 storage and a Modal GPU, and never used to train anything. How it works

  1. Scan the print in colour, not greyscale: At 600 DPI for a small print. Colour mode records the sepia or silver tone the paper actually carries.
  2. Correct overall contrast locally, if it needs it: A flat, low-contrast print benefits from a levels adjustment in your own editor first. That step never leaves your machine.
  3. Restore the faces: Upload here, up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels. RestoreFormer++ rebuilds each face and identity-checks it against your original.
  4. Decide about colour separately: The result is monochrome. Add colour deliberately, as its own step, only if you want an interpretation rather than a record.

Frequently asked questions

Does restoring a black-and-white photo add colour to it?
No, and that is deliberate. A restored monochrome photograph comes back monochrome, with the faces rebuilt and the tonality it always had. Adding colour is a separate decision you make explicitly: there is an optional colorize step you can chain onto the same run, and choosing it makes that run an HD run. Leave it off and nothing is invented.
Does the model work less well without colour to read?
No. It reconstructs the structure of a face — the geometry of the eyes, the edge of a lip, the way hair sits — and that structure is fully present in a monochrome image. Colour matters to a colorizing model, which has to guess it, and to your eye. It is close to irrelevant to a face-restoration model.
My print is sepia rather than neutral grey. Is that a problem?
Not at all, and do not correct it away. Sepia is frequently not fading but deliberate chemistry: toning converted the silver image to a more stable compound, which is part of why the print survived to reach you. Scan it in colour so the tone is recorded faithfully, restore, and keep the warmth if you like it.
What is the blue-silver sheen along the edges of my old print?
Silver mirroring — a metallic bloom that forms in the densest, darkest areas of a silver gelatin print, usually starting at the edges where air reached it. It is a physical change in the print surface, not softness, so restoration does not remove it. Photographing the print off-axis in diffuse light reduces how strongly it registers in your scan.
Should I convert my scan to greyscale before uploading?
No. Greyscale discards the warm or cool tone the print actually has and gains you nothing — the file is not meaningfully more accurate, only less complete. Scan and upload in colour. If you decide later to add colour, an RGB source also gives the colorizer more to work with than a flattened one.
Is the black-and-white original kept after the run?
No. Your upload is held on our server for that run and deleted when the run finishes, and in all cases within 24 hours, encrypted in transit, processed in the United States on Cloudflare R2 storage and a Modal GPU, and never used to train anything. Your own copy on your own machine is untouched throughout.
