Convert HEIC to JPG — Free, Fast & Private

HEIC is the default photo format on every iPhone since 2017. It produces beautiful photos at half the file size of JPEG — but almost nothing outside the Apple ecosystem can open them. Windows computers, Android phones, most websites, email clients, and social media platforms either cannot display HEIC files or silently convert them with quality loss.

MiniPx solves this by converting HEIC to JPG directly in your browser. On Safari and other browsers with native HEIC support, the conversion uses the browser's built-in decoder for instant results. On Chrome and Firefox, MiniPx loads a lightweight HEIC decoder (heic2any) that runs as a Web Worker — keeping the conversion fast and your browser responsive even for large files.

The critical difference from other HEIC converters: your photos never leave your device. Services like CloudConvert, FreeConvert, and iLoveIMG upload your HEIC files to their servers for processing. MiniPx processes everything client-side — your personal photos, family memories, and work documents stay on your computer or phone from start to finish.

Why HEIC files do not work everywhere

HEIC uses the HEVC (H.265) video codec for compression — the same technology used in 4K video streaming. This codec is covered by patents, which means operating systems and browsers need to license it to support HEIC. Apple pays for this license on macOS and iOS, so HEIC works natively on Apple devices. But Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Windows do not include HEVC support by default due to licensing costs.

This is why your iPhone photos open perfectly on your Mac but not on your Windows PC or when shared with Android users. Converting to JPG eliminates this compatibility problem — JPEG is universally supported by every device, browser, operating system, and website on the planet.

Batch convert iPhone photos

Transferring photos from an iPhone to a Windows computer often results in a folder full of .heic files that Windows cannot preview or open. MiniPx handles batch conversion — drop your entire photo folder in and convert all files to JPG at once. Download the converted files as a ZIP and you have a folder of universally compatible JPEGs ready to use in any application. No file count limits, no software to install.

How it works

  1. Open MiniPx HEIC converter: Click the converter above or go to minipx.com/convert-heic-to-jpg. No download or signup needed.
  2. Add your HEIC files: Drag and drop HEIC or HEIF files from your computer, or tap to browse. You can add multiple files at once.
  3. Convert to JPG: Click Convert. The HEIC decoder runs in your browser — your photos are never uploaded anywhere.
  4. Download JPG files: Save converted files individually or download all as a ZIP. Each file shows the original HEIC size and the JPG output size.

Frequently asked questions

What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11 (2017). It produces photos that are roughly half the size of equivalent JPEGs while maintaining the same visual quality. The trade-off is that HEIC is not universally supported — Windows, many web browsers, and most websites cannot open HEIC files directly.
Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?
Apple uses HEIC as the default format because it saves significant storage space — a 12-megapixel photo is about 2-3 MB in HEIC versus 5-8 MB in JPEG. This adds up quickly on a 128GB or 256GB phone. You can change this in Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible, but you will use roughly twice the storage for photos.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
There is a small quality loss because HEIC uses more efficient compression than JPEG. However, the difference is invisible to the human eye at the quality level MiniPx uses (92%). The converted JPEG will look identical to the HEIC original at normal viewing sizes.
Can I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?
Yes. Open MiniPx in any browser on Windows (Chrome, Firefox, or Edge), drop your HEIC files in, and download as JPG. No software installation needed. Windows does not natively support HEIC without installing the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store.
Are my HEIC photos uploaded to a server?
No. MiniPx converts HEIC files entirely in your browser using a client-side decoder. Your photos never leave your device. This makes it safe for personal photos, work documents, and anything you would not want stored on an unknown server.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
Yes. MiniPx supports batch conversion — drop multiple HEIC files at once and convert them all to JPG. Download individually or as a ZIP file. There is no file count limit.
Is HEIC the same as HEIF?
HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the format specification. HEIC (High Efficiency Image Coding) is the specific implementation using HEVC compression — which is what iPhones use. For practical purposes, they are the same thing. MiniPx handles both .heic and .heif files.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG instead of JPG?
MiniPx converts HEIC to JPG by default for the smallest file sizes. If you need PNG output (for transparency or lossless quality), convert to JPG first in MiniPx, then use the main compressor to convert the JPG to PNG. For most uses, JPG is the better choice.
Does converting HEIC to JPG remove EXIF data?
MiniPx strips EXIF metadata (GPS location, camera info, timestamps) by default during conversion. This protects your privacy. If you need to keep metadata, you can toggle this off in the settings.
Why can I not open HEIC files on my computer?
HEIC uses HEVC video codec for compression, which requires licensing. Windows and many Linux systems do not include HEVC support by default. macOS and iOS support HEIC natively. The easiest solution is to convert to JPG using MiniPx — it works in any browser without installing codecs.
