WebP is the usual web replacement for JPG, but converting JPG to WebP re-encodes already-compressed pixels, so quality and size both depend on the setting. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
A second lossy pass
The JPG is decoded to pixels and encoded again as WebP. Two lossy steps compound, so the Smart preset can show small artefacts a gentler setting would not. Compare the before and after view; use Gentle when quality matters more than the last few kilobytes.
A real WebP on every browser
Safari cannot write WebP from a canvas, so MiniPx uses its own WebAssembly encoder on every browser; the output is a genuine WebP. Display support starts at Safari 14 (2020), and some older editors and email clients still cannot open it.
Metadata and orientation
The WebP carries no EXIF, so camera model, GPS position and timestamps are gone. The rotation is applied to the pixels, so portrait photos stay upright.
Is the saving real for your photo?
A JPG that was already saved at low quality has little left to remove, so the WebP gain can be small, and a very small JPG can even come out larger. The measured table uses real photographs so you can see the spread. The result card shows the actual change for each of your files before you save.
When to keep the JPG
Keep JPG when the destination is an email client, a print service, a government form or an older editor. Use WebP for pages you control. If you serve both, keep the JPG as the fallback.
Batches and big files
