ShortPixel is an optimisation pipeline. Its centre of gravity is the WordPress plugin: install it, and images are optimised as they enter the media library, without you thinking about it again. There is also an API and a CLI for the same service. Every image is processed in ShortPixel’s cloud, and usage is metered in credits — the free plan carries 100 per month.
MiniPx is not a pipeline. It is a tool you open when you have files in front of you. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is metered, and there is no account.
Where ShortPixel is the better choice
If you run a WordPress site with a growing media library, ShortPixel does something MiniPx structurally cannot: it works while you are not there. Automatic optimisation on upload, bulk processing of an existing library, and CDN-adjacent delivery features are the whole point of it, and no browser tool replaces that.
Equally, if you want image optimisation inside a build script or a server-side workflow, an API is the correct shape for the job.
Where the credit model bites
100 credits a month is a real constraint on a photography-heavy site — one shoot can exhaust it. Credits are also the wrong unit for occasional work: compressing forty images once a quarter means either paying for a plan you barely use, or rationing.
MiniPx has no meter at all. The limit is 5 files per batch on the free tier, lifted by Pro, and there is no monthly ceiling on either — run it forty times a day if you like.
The privacy difference is structural, not a policy
ShortPixel processes your images on its servers. That is fine for product shots and blog headers. It is a different question for client work under NDA, unreleased designs, or anything with a person’s documents in it — not because the company is untrustworthy, but because a policy is a promise and local processing is an architecture. MiniPx cannot send your file anywhere; there is no upload path in it.
