MiniPx vs Kraken.io — 1MB Web Limit vs No Upload — Free, Fast & Private
Kraken.io is an API product. The web interface exists mainly to demonstrate it, and its constraints show that: the free web tool does not accept images above 1MB, and even the paid plans cap uploads at 8MB. A free account comes with 100MB of testing quota.
A 1MB ceiling is the important number, because it excludes the files most people actually need compressed. A modern phone photo is 4–12MB. A DSLR JPEG is larger still. The free web tool therefore cannot take the input that sends most people looking for a compressor in the first place.
MiniPx has no size limit at all
Because compression happens on your own machine, there is no upload to bound. A 60MB TIFF or a 24-megapixel RAW-derived JPEG is limited only by your device’s memory. The free tier’s only restriction is 5 files per batch; Pro lifts that.
When Kraken.io is the right tool
If you are building image optimisation into an application — user uploads processed server-side, an asset pipeline, a CMS integration — an API is the correct architecture and MiniPx is not a competitor. A browser tool cannot serve a backend.
MiniPx is the better fit when a person is looking at the files: preparing photographs for a listing, shrinking documents for a portal, converting a folder of HEIC images.
Signup and privacy
Kraken.io requires an account for anything beyond the limited web demo, and processes images on its infrastructure. MiniPx requires no account for anything, and cannot transmit your files — there is no upload path in the code.
