Compress Photo for Government Exams | MiniPx — Free, Fast & Private

Indian government exam portals have strict image size requirements that vary by examination. SSC typically requires 20-50KB for photos and 10-20KB for signatures. RRB railway exams need 20-50KB. IBPS bank exams require 20-50KB. State PSC exams vary by state, usually 20-100KB.

The challenge is that phone cameras produce photos of 4-12MB — 100 to 600 times larger than what portals accept. MiniPx bridges this gap by combining compression with dimension reduction to hit exact size targets.

For most government exams: upload your photo, select JPEG format, Tiny preset, and 800px max width. This produces files of 20-60KB — within the limits of virtually every exam portal. For signatures, the same settings typically produce 10-30KB files.

MiniPx shows the exact file size after compression, so you can verify compliance before submitting your application. If the file is slightly over the limit, reduce width to 640px. If the portal still rejects it, crop tighter to the face or the signature rather than hunting for a smaller width.

Some exams publish specifications different enough to be worth their own page, because the general advice above will fail them. UPSC wants a triple signature and caps the photograph at 200KB. CTET states its sizes in centimetres rather than pixels and gives the signature only a 3-30KB window. GATE allows up to 600KB but enforces an aspect ratio between 0.66 and 0.89, so uploads there fail on shape rather than size. Check your own notification against those pages before compressing. If a portal has already refused your file, work through the eight usual causes — four of them have nothing to do with file size.

Your passport photos and signatures stay completely private. MiniPx processes everything in your browser — your identity documents are never uploaded to any server during compression.

How it works

  1. Upload photo or signature: Add your passport photo (white background) or signature (white paper, dark ink) image.
  2. Set JPEG + Tiny + 800px: This combination meets requirements for SSC, RRB, IBPS, and most state PSC portals.
  3. Verify the file size: MiniPx displays the exact compressed size. Cross-check with your exam portal requirements.
  4. Download and submit: Save the compressed file and upload to your exam application form.

Frequently asked questions

What size do SSC exam photos need to be?
SSC typically requires JPEG photos between 20-50KB and signatures between 10-20KB. Dimensions should be at least 200x230 pixels for photos. Check the specific SSC notification for exact requirements as they may vary.
What about RRB railway exam photos?
RRB recruitment portals usually require JPEG photos between 20-50KB with minimum 200x200 pixel dimensions. Signatures between 10-20KB. Use Tiny preset with 800px width.
What are IBPS bank exam photo requirements?
IBPS typically requires JPEG photos between 20-50KB (200x230 pixels minimum) and signatures between 10-20KB. These requirements are consistent across IBPS PO, Clerk, and SO exams.
My compressed file is 51KB but the limit is 50KB
Reduce the max width from 800px to 640px, which roughly halves the file size. Alternatively, ensure Tiny preset is selected. A 640px Tiny JPEG is typically 20-40KB.
Can I use the same photo for multiple exam applications?
Yes, but verify that the compressed size meets each portal specific requirements. You can compress the same photo multiple times with different settings for different exams.
The portal says my image format is wrong
Ensure you selected JPEG (not PNG or WebP) as the output format. Some portals only accept .jpg files. MiniPx produces standard JPEG files that are compatible with all government portals.
