How it works

“Vintage” is not one condition; it is a century of different chemistries ageing in different directions. A tintype or ambrotype from the 1860s is an image on metal or glass, usually dark, usually low in contrast, and often sitting behind a varnish that has crazed. A cabinet card of the 1890s is an albumen print on card stock that yellows and loses its highlights first, which is why great-grandfather seems to be dissolving from the forehead down. Silver gelatin prints of the mid-twentieth century are the most durable of the lot, though the edges often carry the blue-silver sheen of mirroring. Colour is where the real losses are: the dye layers in a 1970s print do not fade at the same rate, which is why a seventies photograph reliably drifts orange or magenta while a Kodachrome slide from the same decade still looks startlingly correct. Instant prints are a category of their own — small, soft on the day they were made, and prone to chemical blotching.

The model reads none of that history, and only touches the faces. RestoreFormer++ locates each face, rebuilds it at high resolution and blends it back into your frame, whatever era the surrounding photograph came from. So the useful question is not “can it restore a cabinet card” but “is there enough of a face left in my copy of the cabinet card”. Three things are firmly outside its remit and stay that way: the overall colour cast of a faded colour print, which is a levels adjustment rather than a restoration; physical damage such as crazed varnish, emulsion loss, foxing and torn corners, which needs the brush on the scratch remover; and anything in a photograph with no findable face, which is declined rather than processed.

Getting the object into a file is genuinely half the work. Paper prints go on a flatbed at 600 DPI, face down, with the lid closed. A tintype is a mirror, so a flatbed usually gives you a picture of the scanner: photograph it instead, in soft indirect daylight, camera slightly off-axis, with nothing bright behind you. Glass plate negatives want light coming through them from behind and then an inversion. Slides and film belong in a scanner with a transparency unit. Whatever the source, crop the mount, the bevel or the scanner bed away with the on-device crop tool so the faces occupy more of the frame, and correct any global cast before you upload. An heirloom deserves an explicit account of where its digital copy goes. Restoration is part of Cloud HD, the Pro-only, opt-in feature set that runs on our GPU because the model will not fit in a browser. Your file is encrypted in transit, uploaded to our server for that run and deleted when the run finishes, and in all cases within 24 hours. Processing happens in the United States, on Cloudflare R2 storage and a Modal GPU, and nothing you upload is ever used to train anything. How it works

  1. Identify what you are holding: A card-mounted print, a metal plate, a glass negative, a slide and an instant print each need a different capture method.
  2. Capture it cleanly: Scan paper at 600 DPI, light metal plates diffusely and off-axis, and put slides and negatives through a transparency scanner.
  3. Fix any global colour cast first: Correct an overall orange or magenta shift in your own editor before uploading. The model rebuilds faces, not the colour balance of the whole frame.
  4. Restore the faces: Upload the corrected file here, up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels, and let each face be rebuilt and identity-checked.

Frequently asked questions

Does it matter which era or process the photograph came from?
Not to the model, which only looks for faces. It matters a great deal to you, because each process ages differently and that changes what is left to work with. A cabinet card fades from the highlights down, a seventies colour print shifts towards orange as one dye layer dies first, and an instant photograph was low resolution on the day it was taken.
My colour prints from the seventies have gone orange. Will restoration correct the cast?
No. The model rebuilds faces; it does not rebalance the colour of the whole photograph, and the orange cast will still be there around the restored faces. A global cast is a levels or white-balance adjustment, which any photo editor does locally in seconds without an upload. Do that first, then restore.
Can it restore a tintype or a glass plate negative?
It can restore the digital copy you make of one, provided a face is findable in that copy. The hard part is the photography, not the model: metal plates are mirrors, so you are fighting reflections, and a glass negative needs to be lit from behind and inverted before anything else. Get a clean, evenly lit capture and the rest is ordinary.
What about Polaroids and other instant prints?
They restore, but expect less than from a negative-based print of the same age. Instant film was never high resolution, the image area is small, and many have chemical blotching that is physical damage rather than softness. Scan at a high resolution so the face occupies as many pixels as possible, and accept that blotches will come back as blotches.
Is a slide different from a print for this purpose?
Yes, and usually better. A 35 mm transparency holds more detail than the paper print made from it, and Kodachrome in particular has held its colour remarkably well. Scan slides on a scanner with a transparency unit rather than photographing them against a window, then upload the scan. The 24 megapixel ceiling is generous for a 35 mm frame.
Who can see a vintage photo I upload?
Nobody browses them. The file is uploaded to our server for that run and deleted when the run finishes, and in all cases within 24 hours, encrypted in transit, processed in the United States on Cloudflare R2 storage and a Modal GPU, and never used to train anything. This is the Cloud HD path, and it is the only part of MiniPx that uploads at all.
