Half a wedding photograph is statistics and half of it is culture. The statistical half comes back beautifully: skin under daylight, hydrangeas and roses, pew wood, sandstone porches, a marquee lawn, the polished car at the kerb. All of those have a colour the world reliably gives them, and DDColor has seen millions of examples. The cultural half is a different problem entirely. A bride’s outfit is a decision — white in one tradition, red and gold in another, cream because the shop had cream — and none of that decision survives in grey. The model produces something plausible for the drape and sheen in front of it, which is not the same as producing what happened, and on a wedding photo that gap is the one everyone spots.

So use it as a base layer and let the family finish it. The practical workflow is: colorize the whole frame in one run, print or show the result to whoever was there, and repaint the two or three garments somebody actually remembers. An hour of manual colorization from a grey scan becomes ten minutes of correcting a dress and a buttonhole, and the ambient colour — the light through a window, the warmth of an indoor reception — is already coherent across the frame in a way hand-painting struggles to match. Wedding prints have usually had a hard life. They were framed, folded into albums, kept behind glass in sunlight and handled at every anniversary, so the scan often carries a crease down the middle, a stain where the mount touched it, and faded corners. Colorization will not touch any of that — it changes chroma and leaves the light-and-dark structure exactly as it found it, so the crease returns in colour. Treat repairs as separate jobs in a deliberate order: bring soft faces back with the face restorer, paint out a torn corner or a frame mark with the object remover (best over small regions with predictable surroundings, like a plain wall or fabric), and colorize once the frame is as intact as it is going to get. For an anniversary print, do colour before size. The colorizer returns a PNG at exactly the resolution you gave it — no more — so a small album print stays a small file, in colour. How it works

  1. Pick the sharpest frame: Wedding albums usually hold several near-identical shots. The sharpest, best-lit one colorizes best — the others rarely repay a second run.
  2. Scan without the album page: Remove the print from its corners if it is safe to do so, or crop out the album card, so the model spends its attention on the photograph.

Frequently asked questions

Will it get my grandmother’s wedding dress colour right?
Only by luck. A white dress is safe because white is unambiguous, but any coloured gown — a red or gold sari, a green kanjeevaram, a 1970s lilac bridesmaid dress — is a guess. The grey the fabric recorded is compatible with several colours, and the model picks the commonest. If the family knows the real colour, repaint that one region afterwards.
How does it handle a wedding sari or a lehenga?
It handles the drape and the embroidery structure perfectly, because those are luminance, and it invents the hue. Expect it to reach for warm reds and golds on ceremonial garments, which is statistically sensible and sometimes right. Treat the output as a base layer and correct the garment if the family remembers it differently.
What about the flowers and the church interior?
Those usually land well. Foliage, wood, brick, stone and stained glass all have strong statistical signatures, so bouquets, pews and garden receptions come back convincing. It is the human-chosen colours — dresses, ties, buttonholes, cake icing — that are unknowable from grey and where the model is reasoning rather than recalling.
Can it repair the crease across a folded wedding portrait?
No. Colorization adds colour and changes nothing else, so a crease, a stain from a frame or a torn corner comes back in colour exactly where it was. Damage removal is a different tool — the object remover paints a masked area back in, and works best over small regions with predictable surroundings.
Is it worth colorizing for an anniversary print?
Usually yes, if the photograph is sharp and the faces are a decent size. Colorize first and enlarge second, so the printer gets colour and resolution in the right order. The output is a PNG at exactly the resolution you uploaded, so plan the print size from that number rather than hoping the tool adds pixels.
