There are five common causes and they are not interchangeable. Camera shake smears the entire frame in one direction. Subject motion smears one thing while the background stays crisp. A focus miss leaves one plane sharp and another soft, with the softness spreading evenly outward rather than along a line. Too few pixels looks blocky rather than smeared once you zoom in. Compression damage shows as flat patches and mosquito noise clustered around edges and lettering. The Cloud HD enhancer is strong on the last two and on mild versions of the first three; it is not magic on the severe versions, and a page that said otherwise would be selling you a disappointment.

Route the diagnosis to the right page. If everything is uniformly smeared, read unblurring a shaky image for what shutter speed did to the frame. If one plane is crisp and your subject is not, the page on an out-of-focus photo covers depth of field and what recovery is realistic. If the softness came with speckle in the shadows, treat it as noise first and read about removing noise from a photo. Each is the same model with a different honest expectation attached.

The one case where enhancement is the wrong tool entirely. If the file is small — a thumbnail, an old profile picture, an image saved off a web page — the fault is missing pixels, and enhancement returns the pixel count it was given. Send it to the image upscaler instead, which is free and on-device for everyday enlargement and has its own Cloud HD path for a four-times enlargement on our GPU. When both faults are present, clean first and enlarge second, because an upscaler faithfully magnifies whatever it is handed, damage included.

How it works

  1. Diagnose at 100%: Open the original at actual pixels and decide: uniform softness, directional smear, one soft plane, or simply too few pixels.
  2. Rule out the free fixes: A low-resolution source wants the upscaler, not the enhancer. A too-dark photo may just need levels. Neither costs a Cloud HD run.
  3. Upload the best original you have: JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels — the camera file, not a forwarded copy.
  4. Run once, then judge honestly: Compare the same crop before and after at 100%. If the fault was resolution rather than blur, change tools rather than repeating the run.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out which kind of blur I am looking at?
Zoom to 100% and ask two questions. Is everything equally soft, or are some parts crisp? Uniform softness points at shake or a low-resolution source; mixed sharpness points at focus or a moving subject. Then look at a hard edge: smeared along one direction means motion, a soft glow in all directions means focus.
Only part of my photo is blurry. What does that mean?
Something in the frame moved while the rest did not, or the focus landed on a different plane from the one you cared about. Either way the sharp regions prove the camera itself was steady. The enhancer improves the soft regions somewhat, but it cannot pull a moving subject back into a single instant — that information was averaged away during the exposure.
My photo looks blurry because it is small. Is that the same problem?
No, and this is the most commonly misdiagnosed case. A 400-pixel image blown up on a big screen looks soft because there is nothing between the pixels, not because anything was smeared. Enhancement returns the same pixel size, so it will not help there; you want the upscaler, which adds pixels, and ideally both in that order.
Can a blurry screenshot be fixed?
Partly. Screenshots of video or of another screen carry compression damage and sometimes moiré patterning rather than true blur, and the clean-up pass handles compression damage well. Text in a screenshot is the hard case: a model reconstructs plausible letterforms, which can look convincing while being wrong, so never treat rebuilt text as a record.
If the result is not good enough, have I wasted a run?
A run that fails or is refused is never charged. A run that completes and simply does not impress you does count, which is why this page pushes diagnosis first — spending a run on a photo whose problem is resolution rather than blur is the commonest way to be disappointed.
