Sharpness is two different things wearing one word. Resolution is how much detail the file physically contains; acutance is how abruptly brightness changes at the edge of that detail. A sharpen slider only raises acutance — it darkens the dark side of every edge and brightens the bright side so your eye reads the transition as crisper. The photograph gains no information at all, which is why a heavily sharpened image can look simultaneously crunchy and empty. The Cloud HD enhancer works on the resolution side instead: it predicts the fine structure that would have produced these soft pixels and paints it back in, blended with your own data.

Halos are permanent, so sharpen last or not at all. Radius and amount are the two knobs on an unsharp mask, and a radius wider than a couple of pixels leaves a visible light rim on every high-contrast boundary — bare branches against sky are the classic giveaway. Save that as a JPEG and the halo is now part of the image data; a later model reads it as genuine light and reconstructs around it, which is how a photo ends up looking retouched by two people who never spoke. If you have a haloed copy and an unsharpened one, upload the unsharpened one.

Know whether sharpening is even the right answer. If the image is soft because your hands moved, the honest frame is motion, and unblurring a shaky image explains what survives. If it is soft because the focus landed on the wrong plane, that is a different failure again. Sharpening is the right word only when the detail is present but low in contrast.

The privacy position, without the usual overstatement. Nearly every MiniPx tool — the compressors, the converters, the croppers — runs entirely inside your browser and uploads nothing. Cloud HD is the deliberate exception, because RestoreFormer++ will not fit in a tab: the photo is uploaded to our server for that run and deleted when the run finishes, and in all cases within 24 hours, processed in the United States, encrypted in transit, and never used to train anything. When you want a smaller file for the web after sharpening, the on-device compressor does that with no upload at all.

How it works

  1. Undo any sharpening you already applied: Go back to a version with no halos in it. Sharpening stacks badly, and the model reads a haloed edge as real.
  2. Upload the soft original: JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels. The best copy you own beats the most convenient one.
  3. Let the model reconstruct the texture: The Cloud HD clean-up pass rebuilds fine structure and any face gets a dedicated restoration pass, usually in well under a minute.
  4. Sharpen for the output last, if at all: Screen and paper want different amounts of bite. Any final touch belongs after this step, on the copy you are about to publish.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the sharpen slider in a photo editor?
A slider runs an unsharp mask: it finds places where brightness already changes and exaggerates the change. It adds no information, it only makes the information you have shout. The Cloud HD model instead predicts what structure most plausibly produced the soft pixels and reconstructs it, so fine texture reappears rather than existing edges getting louder.
Why do sharpened photos get white outlines around branches and railings?
That is the halo an unsharp mask leaves: it brightens one side of every edge and darkens the other, and against sky the bright side is glaring. Once a halo is saved into a JPEG it is part of the picture, and no later pass can tell it from real light. Sharpen once, at the end, or let a reconstruction model do it.
Will sharpening make the noise worse?
A slider will, because noise is exactly the kind of small brightness change it amplifies — that is the crunchy look of an over-sharpened night shot. Our clean-up pass separates the two: it treats grainy speckle as damage to suppress while treating texture as structure to rebuild, so sharpness rises and the speckle does not come with it.
Can I sharpen a photo that is already sharp, just to add bite?
You can, but the gain is small and the risk is real — a well-focused photo has little for the model to reconstruct, so you mostly spend a run to move nothing. Enhancement earns its keep on photos that are genuinely soft, noisy, faded or carrying compression damage. If yours is only slightly flat, a contrast adjustment in any editor is free.
Does the file come back in the same format and size?
Same pixel dimensions, always. Input can be JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels. If you need a smaller file for the web afterwards, the on-device compressor does that without any upload. One enhancement is a single general Cloud HD run and a failed run is not charged.
