“Converter” normally promises a swap; this is not a swap. Most things called a converter change a container — JPEG to PNG, HEIC to JPEG — and MiniPx has one of those, running in your browser, doing exactly that. Some are filters instead: one arithmetic rule pushed across every pixel, blind to whether it is crossing a face or a hedge, which is why the “colorize” button in a photo editor yields a tinted wash rather than a photograph. This tool belongs to neither family. Nothing is swapped and no rule is applied uniformly. A trained network looks at your picture, decides what it is looking at, and writes a different answer into every part of the frame. Expect the behaviour of a judgement, not of a conversion — including the fact that two runs on the same file need not agree exactly.

There are no controls because there is nothing honest to control. People arriving from the word “converter” often look for a strength slider, a palette preset or a choice of eras. None of those exist here, and adding them would be theatre: the model makes one prediction per region, and a global warmth control would simply lay a cast over its work, which any editor already does better. What you can do instead is treat the output as a base layer. Colour the whole frame in one run, then correct the two or three regions whose real colour you actually know — a dress, a car, a football strip — which turns hours of manual colouring into minutes of correction. One direction is lossless; the other is not. Desaturating a colour photo is arithmetic you can repeat forever with identical output. Going the other way is a guess, and that asymmetry has practical consequences. You can take the file this tool gives you, strip the colour in any editor, and land back on something that matches your input, because the light and dark were never altered. You cannot round-trip in reverse and expect stability: feed the desaturated result back in and the second answer may differ from the first. So if a photograph was originally in colour and somebody desaturated it, dig out that colour original instead — no prediction beats the data. And if the file needs more than colour, the repair models are separate on purpose: the face restorer for blurred faces, the object remover for a small mark over predictable surroundings.

What it costs, and what happens to your file. How it works

  1. Choose a monochrome source: Any black-and-white or greyscale JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels will do — a scan, a phone photo, or a desaturated file.
  2. Upload it to the converter: The file travels encrypted to our GPU. There is nothing to configure — the model reads the image and decides on its own.
  3. Wait for one pass of DDColor: Seconds for most images, up to about a minute on a cold start. A failed run is not charged against your allowance.
  4. Download the PNG and edit if needed: Use the result as a finished image or as a base layer, correcting any region whose real colour you actually know.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a filter or an actual model?
An actual model. A filter applies the same arithmetic to every pixel regardless of what it depicts; DDColor is a neural network that segments the image, works out what each region probably is, and predicts colour accordingly. That is why grass, skin and timber each get their own treatment rather than one global tint, and why it needs a GPU rather than your browser.
Why are there no sliders or presets?
Because there is nothing meaningful to slide. The model outputs one prediction per region; exposing a “warmth” control would just paint a global cast over its work, which any photo editor already does better. If you want a specific colour in a specific place, adjust that region after the run — the AI output makes a strong base layer for manual editing.
Can I convert the colour version back to black and white?
Yes, in any editor, and it will look like your original because the luminance was never altered. But the conversion is not reversible in the other direction: the colour the model added is inference, not recovered data, so re-running it on the desaturated result will not necessarily produce the same colours a second time.
Does it work on a greyscale file that was originally colour?
It works, and it is worth understanding what it does. If a colour photo was desaturated, the original hues are gone from the file; the model re-invents plausible ones rather than recovering the true ones. Where you still have the colour original, use that — no model beats the real thing.
What file types does the converter accept and return?
It accepts JPEG, PNG and WebP up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels, and always returns a PNG at exactly the resolution you uploaded. PNG is lossless, so the output is a clean master. If you need a different format afterwards, the on-device converter handles that without any upload.
