UPSC publishes its upload rules in a single document — Instructions for Uploading the Photo & Signature, on the application portal at upsconline.nic.in. Three numbers matter, and two of them are widely misquoted online:

Photograph — JPG, 20 KB to 200 KB, saved with the filename photo. Not 300 KB: that figure circulates widely but is not what the instructions say.
Signature — JPG, 20 KB to 100 KB, 350–500 pixels, saved with the filename signature.
Live photograph — a webcam or mobile capture is now mandatory, and UPSC matches it against the photo you uploaded. A mismatch stops the application there.

The triple signature catches people out. UPSC does not want one signature. You sign your name three times, one below the other, on plain white paper in black ink, with a clear gap between each. All three are scanned into a single image. An application carrying a single signature is rejected on specification grounds, no matter how clean the scan is.

For the photograph: upload it, choose JPEG with the Smart preset and 800px max width. That lands most phone photos between 80–180 KB, inside the band. UPSC also requires a plain white background and that your face fills 75% — three quarters — of the frame, head centred, both ear lobes visible, eyes open and not covered by hair. Photos are rejected far more often for weak face coverage than for file size.

For the triple signature: scan all three signatures as one image, then compress with JPEG and the Smart preset at 500px max width so the result stays inside the 350–500 pixel window. Watch the floor as well as the ceiling here — the minimum is 20 KB, and a hard-compressed signature scan can fall under it. If it does, switch to the Gentle preset.

MiniPx shows the exact output size before you download, so you can check both bounds against the portal’s limits rather than guessing. If a photo comes out over 200 KB, drop the width to 640px; if it lands under 20 KB, use Gentle.

If an upload has already been refused, check the eight usual causes before compressing again. If you are applying to more than one exam this cycle, do not reuse the same files: the specifications genuinely differ. CTET allows only 10–100 KB for the photograph and 3–30 KB for a single signature, and GATE permits up to 600 KB but enforces a pixel ceiling of 530 × 690 that a UPSC-sized photo can exceed.

Repeat for your triple signature: Sign three times vertically on plain white paper in black ink, scan all three as one image, then compress at 500px width.
Download and upload to UPSC: Save the files as photo.jpg and signature.jpg, then upload them on the UPSC application portal.

What are UPSC photo requirements?

It is 20KB to 200KB. The 300KB figure is repeated on many sites but does not match UPSC's own document, "Instructions for Uploading the Photo & Signature", published on the application portal at upsconline.nic.in. Compress to 200KB or below and you are inside the limit either way.

What are UPSC signature requirements?

Why does UPSC want three signatures?

What is the live photograph and can I skip it?

No. Capturing a live photograph through your webcam, or via your mobile by scanning the QR code shown on screen, is mandatory. UPSC matches it against the passport-size photo you uploaded; if the two do not match you cannot proceed with the application.

My photo is under 20KB — what do I do?

Use the Gentle preset instead of Smart, or raise the max width to 1280px. Both produce a larger file while keeping the photo inside the band. Under 20KB is a rejection just as surely as over 200KB is.

My photo is over 200KB — what do I do?

Reduce max width to 640px, or switch to the Tiny preset. If it is still over, use both together — a 640px Tiny JPEG is typically 30-80KB.

Can I use MiniPx for other exam applications?

Yes. MiniPx works for SSC, RRB, IBPS, state PSC, NTA and other competitive exam portals. Their limits differ from UPSC's — SSC photos are usually 20-50KB — so check your own notification and set the target size accordingly.

Is it safe for my identity documents?
