Colorize Vintage PhotosPro, on our server

Old film did not translate colour into grey the way your eye does. Plates and papers made before about 1925 were orthochromatic: wide open to blue, reasonable on green, and nearly blind to red. That is why Victorian skies burn out to blank white while a red brick wall or a soldier’s tunic sinks to something close to black. DDColor was trained on modern colour photographs and their greyscale conversions, so it assumes a panchromatic tonal response — a grey that behaves normally. Feed it a genuinely orthochromatic print and it will do a competent job on faces and foliage and a poor job on anything that was red, because the red is not in the file to be recovered. Knowing that in advance is the difference between a disappointing result and a result you can interpret.

Toning is a colour, and the model will believe it. A sepia print, a gold-toned albumen print and a plain silver-gelatin print are three different inputs even when they show the same negative. Sepia is real brown data sitting in the file, so the colorizer treats it as evidence and skews the whole frame warm — pleasant on a portrait, wrong on a garden. The fix is free and takes ten seconds: desaturate the scan to neutral grey in any editor before uploading. If the print has a deckled border or a mount card, trim to the image itself first with the on-device crop tool, because the mount board competes for the model’s attention and for your 24-megapixel budget.

Sequence matters when the print is small. Vintage contact prints are often 6×9 cm or smaller, which is a modest pixel count even at 600 DPI. Colorize first, then enlarge: colour gives the upscaler more structure to work with than grey does. If the faces are soft as well as grey, run the face restorer before colorizing — it has an optional colorize step built in, so the two happen in one pass. What none of this does is repair the print: creases, foxing and silver mirroring come back in colour, exactly where they were. Where the run happens, and what it costs. DDColor is far too heavy for a browser, so this is one of the seven Cloud HD tools that run on our GPU server instead of on your device. That is a Pro feature and it is metered: 150 runs a month on Pro Monthly, 200 on Pro Annual, resetting on the 1st with no rollover, and a failed run is never charged. Your upload is encrypted in transit, processed in the United States, deleted when the run finishes and in all cases within 24 hours, and never used to train anything. Every other MiniPx tool — cropping, converting, compressing, on-device upscaling — never sends your image anywhere at all.

How it works

  1. Scan the vintage print flat: Use a flatbed at 600 DPI for prints under 15 cm, or photograph square-on in soft daylight with no glare on the surface.
  2. Neutralise heavy toning: If the print is strongly sepia or gold-toned, desaturate the scan to plain grey first so the model is not reading a chemical cast as colour.
  3. Run the colorizer: Upload the JPEG, PNG or WebP — up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels. DDColor runs on our GPU and returns a PNG at the same resolution.
  4. File the pair together: Keep the neutral scan and the colorized PNG side by side, with the colorized copy clearly named as colorized.

Frequently asked questions

Why do red things in very old photos come back too dark?
Because the film was blind to them. Emulsions before roughly 1925 were orthochromatic — sensitive to blue and green, barely sensitive to red — so lips, brickwork and red flags recorded as near-black. DDColor reads that near-black as a shadow rather than as a colour, and colours it dark. It is a limitation of the negative, not of the model.
Should I neutralise a sepia tone before uploading?
Usually yes. Sepia is a real brown cast in the file, and the model treats it as information rather than as a chemical accident, so results skew warm across the whole frame. Desaturate the scan to neutral grey in any editor first, then upload. If you would rather not, run it both ways — a colorize run costs one unit of your monthly allowance either way.
Does it work on tintypes and glass-plate scans?
It works on any image file you can produce from them, including a phone capture of a tintype. Tintypes are laterally reversed and often very dark; flip and lift the exposure before uploading, because DDColor allocates colour from the tones it can actually see. Plate scratches and emulsion loss stay exactly as they are — nothing is repaired.
Will colours be consistent between two prints from the same day?
Not guaranteed. Each run is independent, so two prints of the same afternoon can come back with slightly different dress and wall tones. Colorize them in one sitting, compare side by side, and pick the pair that reads best together — or correct one to match the other in an editor afterwards.
How long does my vintage scan sit on the server?
Only for the run. The upload is encrypted in transit, processed once on the Cloud HD GPU, and deleted when the run finishes — in all cases within 24 hours. It is never used to train anything. Everything else on MiniPx, including cropping and converting, runs entirely on your own device.
