A car is a big mask on a kind surface, which is an unusual combination. Most large removals fail because the surface behind them carries structure. A vehicle usually stands on tarmac, gravel, block paving or concrete — materials with texture but no direction, no rhythm and no line that has to arrive anywhere in particular. The road therefore closes as convincingly as sky does, even across the width of an estate car. The difficulty lives entirely above the wheels, in the strip of scene the bodywork was blocking: a kerb, the base of a garden wall, a hedge bottom, a low fence, a gatepost, and frequently the front of whatever was parked behind. Those are horizontals, and horizontals are what the eye audits without being told to.

Mask the vehicle plus everything it put into the picture. Wing mirrors, a roof aerial, a tow bar and a roof box all sit outside the shape people paint, and a surviving aerial floating over an empty road is a comic result. Underneath, there is nearly always a dark band where the body shaded the ground, and on a wet road or beside a shopfront there will be a reflection carrying a recognisable copy of the car. All of that belongs in the same mask, which is one run whatever it holds. If the car is cut by the frame edge, paint straight off the border; there is no penalty for a mask that overruns the picture, and a stub of wing left at the edge is the most common leftover.

Inspect by tracing lines, not by looking at texture. The tarmac will look right, because tarmac always does. Put the finished PNG at full size and follow the kerb from one side of the filled region to the other, then the wall base, then any painted marking. What you are looking for is a step in height, a change of angle, a bay whose dashes do not match its neighbours. Those are the reconstruction showing through, and they are fixable: paint over that short section of the returned image and run it alone, which gives the model a small isolated problem instead of a large one. The same discipline applies to the cables overhead, which are usually the other thing wrong with a street photograph and are painted out in the same pass on the object remover.

Where this fits, and the terms of the run. Frequently asked questions

Is a parked car an easy removal or a hard one?
It is a large object sitting on the most forgiving surface there is. Tarmac, gravel and concrete are uniform and directionless, so the road itself closes without any trouble at all. What makes the job medium rather than easy is everything a car body happens to be standing in front of — a kerb, a low wall, a hedge line, a gatepost, the car parked behind it.
What does the model have to invent behind a vehicle?
Whatever the bodywork was covering: the run of the kerb and its shadow line, the base of a wall or hedge, a section of pavement, the lower half of a fence, sometimes another vehicle. Uniform surfaces come back correctly. Continuous horizontal features are the ones to inspect, because a kerb that steps up or down by a few pixels across the gap is immediately visible to the eye.
Do painted road markings survive across the gap?
Sometimes, and it is worth checking every time. A single continuous white line usually carries across correctly. Dashed centre lines, bay markings, hatching and painted arrows have rhythm and orientation that the model has to guess at, so a bay can come back with the wrong number of dashes or a line can meet the kerb at a slightly wrong angle.
Can I mask only the number plate rather than the whole car?
Yes, and it is a small, well-behaved mask. Brush over the plate with a little margin and the fill continues the bumper or bodywork colour across it, which reads more naturally than a blur or a black box. Keep the mask to the plate itself; extending it over a badge or a light cluster asks the model to reconstruct detail it will get subtly wrong.
What if the car is half out of the frame at the edge?
That is one of the better cases, because half the object is not in the picture to begin with. Paint the visible portion and run the mask right off the frame border rather than stopping short of it — a stub of bodywork left along the edge is the usual mistake. Often a plain crop removes an edge vehicle entirely and costs nothing at all.
