How it works

Remove an Ex from a PhotoPro, on our server

Two different jobs hide inside this one request. If the two of you are standing apart — a metre of beach, a doorway, a stretch of wall between you — then removing them is background reconstruction, and background reconstruction is what this model does well. Paint them out and the sand or the wall closes behind them with nothing to see. If you were touching, the request quietly becomes something else: the model must produce the part of you that their body was covering. That information is not faint or degraded in the file; it was never recorded at all. What comes back is the model’s best composition of a shoulder, a sleeve, a length of hair, and it is generated content sitting on the edge of a real photograph of you.

The crop is usually the better tool, and it is free. A great many of these pictures have the other person at one side of the frame, which means the whole problem disappears with a rectangle. The free on-device crop tool runs in your browser, uploads nothing anywhere, costs no run, and reconstructs not one pixel — what remains is entirely a photograph. It also tends to make a better image: a tight portrait usually beats a wide shot with a suspiciously empty patch beside it. Try it first. Reach for the fill only when cropping would cut the subject in half or throw away the part of the scene that made the picture worth keeping.

If you do run the fill, mask conservatively. Cover their body, the shadow they cast and any reflection, then at the point of contact pull the mask back so it stops at their outline rather than biting into you. Keep it entirely away from your own face — a face composed by a fill is the artefact people spot instantly, and there is no reason to invite it. Work at high zoom along the join, run once, then look hard at the reconstructed region at full size before you use it anywhere. If it reads as invented, the honest move is back to the crop rather than a second and third attempt at the same impossible geometry. Removals where the two people never touch are covered on person removal and, for someone who simply walked into the frame, on photobomber removal, both of which run the same object remover on an easier geometry.

Keep the original, and know the terms of the run. The tool never modifies your file: a new PNG is returned and what you uploaded stays exactly as it was on your own disk. Keeping that original in an archive folder costs nothing and preserves the difference between a record and an edit, which matters more than it seems on the day. On our side there is no copy to keep — this is Cloud HD, a Pro-only option you switch on yourself, running on our GPU in the United States, with the photo and mask encrypted in transit, deleted when the run finishes and in all cases within 24 hours, and never used to train anything. Pro includes 150 runs a month on Monthly and 200 on Annual, of which 10 may be HD; a failed or refused run is not charged. Everything else on MiniPx — cropping, compression, conversion, the background remover — runs entirely in your browser and uploads nothing.

How it works

  1. Try the crop first: Open the free on-device crop tool. If the photo still works with them outside the frame, you are finished and nothing was uploaded.
  2. Open the remover if a crop will not do: Go to minipx.com/remove-ex-from-photo on Pro and upload a JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels.
  3. Mask them, not you: Cover their body, shadow and reflection. At the overlap, pull the mask back to their edge and keep it well away from your face.
  4. Judge the join at full size: Download the PNG and inspect the reconstructed shoulder or sleeve at 100%. If it reads as invented, go back and crop instead.

Frequently asked questions

They have an arm around my shoulder. Can that be fixed cleanly?
Partly, and it is worth setting expectations. Everything beside you rebuilds from the background. The part of you that their arm was covering does not exist in the file, so the model invents a shoulder, a sleeve and a hairline from what it can see of you. Sometimes that lands convincingly; often it produces a shoulder that is subtly not yours, and you will notice.
Would a crop be a better answer than a fill?
Very often, yes. If they are at one side of the frame, cropping removes them completely with nothing reconstructed and nothing invented — and it is free, on your own device, with no upload. A tighter portrait of you also tends to be a better photograph than a wide shot with a gap in it. Try the crop first and only reach for the fill if the framing collapses.
What about a picture where we are holding hands or standing close?
Hands are the hardest thing in this whole tool. They are small, intricate, unique and full of the exact structure a fill has to guess, so an invented hand is usually recognisable as wrong even to people who cannot say why. Where hands are joined, consider masking their body but keeping the frame cropped above or below the join.
Will the version of me that comes back still look like me?
Everything the other person was not covering is returned pixel for pixel — the run never touches anything outside your mask. Where they overlapped you, the reconstructed part is generated, so a covered shoulder, a hidden section of hair or a partly obscured jacket are model output rather than photograph. Keep masks off your face entirely; a face is the one thing not to let a fill compose.
Should I keep the original photograph?
That is your call, but note that the run never alters your file — a new PNG comes back and the original stays on your disk untouched. Many people keep the original in an archive folder and use the edit as their shared version. It costs nothing to keep and it is the only copy that can be a record rather than a reconstruction.
Where is my photo processed, and could anyone see it?
It runs as Cloud HD, the Pro-only opt-in path, on our GPU in the United States, because the model cannot run in a browser. The photo and mask are encrypted in transit, used for that single run, then deleted when the run finishes and in all cases within 24 hours. They are never used to train anything, and the download link itself expires after a few minutes.
