The official wording

The file size must be a minimum of 3 kB and maximum of 300 kB. The maximum pixel resolution is 580 × 180 pixels and the minimum resolution is 250 × 80 pixels.

Source: GATE 2027 — Photograph and Signature (IIT Madras), web page (GATE 2027 (undated page)) — checked 5 October 2026

Only need the signature under 300 KB, with no pixel rules? Compress image to 300 KB aims at that size alone; the tool on this page also checks the pixels and the lower limit.

The rules come from the GATE 2027 — Photograph and Signature (IIT Madras) page, published by IIT Madras (organising institute, GATE 2027). Its size sentence is quoted in the table above. That band is wide. A signature almost never fails on kilobytes here. It fails on proportions.

Reading “1 : R”

GATE writes the ratio height first, as 1 : R, and lets R run from 2.75 up to 3.75. Put plainly, the picture has to be 2.75 to 3.75 times as wide as it is tall. A strip 580 pixels wide may therefore be no taller than about 210 pixels and no shorter than about 155.

A signature written naturally across a line can be wider than that window allows once you crop tight to the ink. Long surnames can run past 3.75 : 1. The fix is not to squash the image. It is to leave a little more paper above and below the ink, so the crop gets taller without distorting your handwriting.

Where the pixel window and the ratio collide

The ratio rule and the pixel limits are checked together, and at the edges they leave less room than either suggests alone. GATE’s own minimum and maximum sizes work out to 3.13 and 3.22, both inside the window. Push to the limits, though, and the choice narrows:

  • At the minimum height of 80 px, only widths from 250 to 300 px satisfy both rules.
  • At the maximum width of 580 px, only heights from 155 to 180 px do.

The safe target is the middle: a crop near 3.25 : 1, about 415 pixels wide. That sits clear of every edge.

The coverage rule and what gets refused

The second rule is about how much of the image is signature: Signature covers 70–80% of the image, measured after cropping. Too much empty paper, and you fail it. Crop so tightly that the ink touches the edges, and you have usually broken the ratio instead. A thin, even margin on all four sides satisfies both.

The official page also shows examples it will not accept. Its captions include a signature on a dark background, one in ink other than blue or black, one too small to read, one with other writing or a background behind it, and one outside the signature box area or not signed horizontally. The written rules in the table add two more: the ink colour, and no capitals, initials or digital signatures.

It also warns that the signature must be the applicant’s own, and that a signature that does not match the one you give at the examination can lead to disqualification. Sign the way you will sign on the day.

From paper to an accepted file

Sign on white paper, horizontally, in black or dark blue. Photograph it in daylight with the phone held flat over the page. If you would rather get the rectangle exactly right by hand first, crop the image to a wide strip, then bring it back here. The tool will not stretch a shape to fit, because compression changes bytes and never proportions.

The photograph has its own rules, with a portrait ratio and a face-coverage requirement; the GATE photo page covers them. If you are also filing with the Union Public Service Commission, note that its signature file is three signatures stacked in one image, at 20–300 KB, so a GATE strip will not do. The exams hub lists every other notice MiniPx has checked.

Common rejection reasons

A signature that does not match the one you sign at the examination (applies to the signature)

If the candidate’s signature does not match with the signature at the time of the examination, the applicant could be disqualified.

Processing happens in your browser. Your signature is never uploaded to MiniPx, and the final size and pixel dimensions are shown before you download.

How it works

  1. Sign horizontally on white paper: Use black or dark blue ink, your normal running signature, no capitals and no initials.
  2. Crop with a thin margin: Leave a little paper on every side. The signature should cover most of the image, and the crop must be 2.75 to 3.75 times wider than tall.
  3. Drop it into the tool: It checks the ratio, scales into 250 × 80 to 580 × 180 px, and compresses to 3–300 KB.
  4. Read the result before downloading: The exact pixel size and file size are shown. If the shape is refused, re-crop rather than stretch.
  5. Upload it in the GATE application: Sign the same way at the examination; a mismatch can disqualify you.

Frequently asked questions

GATE signature kitne KB ka hona chahiye?
Per the official notice, the GATE signature is 3–300 KB. Use the compressor on this page to bring your file inside that limit, and check the size shown next to the result before you upload it on the form.
What is the GATE 2027 signature size?
JPEG/JPG, 3–300 KB, at least 250 × 80 pixels and at most 580 × 180 pixels, with height : width = 1 : R where R is between 2.75 and 3.75.
What does 1 : R mean?
The image must be between 2.75 and 3.75 times as wide as it is tall. Height is written first.
My signature is too wide for the ratio. What do I do?
Re-crop with more paper above and below the ink so the image gets taller. Never stretch the image to fit.
How much of the image should the signature cover?
Signature covers 70–80% of the image, after cropping.
Can I upload a typed or digital signature?
No. Not in ALL CAPITALS, not initials, not a digital signature.
Is my signature uploaded to MiniPx?
No. Everything runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
