NBEMS keeps the arithmetic simple this cycle. The NEET-PG 2026 — Information Bulletin (NBEMS) applies one ceiling to every image a candidate supplies — “The size of image should be less than 80kb.” — and the instructions for the signature and the thumb impression repeat the same limit. There is no separate lower limit and no pixel table. What differs between the three files is not the size but how each one is made. For other forms, the general 80 KB compressor is one of the fixed-size rungs.
What “less than” means for the file you upload
A strict “less than” ceiling is the one place where a candidate can do everything right and still be refused by a single byte. Some upload forms count a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024, and the bulletin does not say which convention its form uses. The tool above therefore aims below the stricter reading: it counts a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes and stops one byte under the limit, so the file passes on either convention.
Because there is no floor, the opposite risk is legibility. A thumb print compressed to a smear is technically within the limit and practically useless. Compress until you are under the ceiling, look at the result at full size, and stop there.
The photograph, and the webcam photo beside it
For the uploaded portrait the bulletin’s framing guidance is that the face takes up at least 70–80% of the frame. A distant snapshot cropped tightly afterwards rarely reaches that coverage with enough detail left, so take the picture close.
NEET-PG also records a second image of you. The bulletin is clear that a real-time webcam photograph is also taken during the application. That capture is not a substitute for the uploaded file and it is not something you can compress — it is taken by the webcam during the application itself. Sit facing a window or a lamp, keep the background plain, and look the way you do in the portrait you uploaded.
Do not try to rescue a casual shot by editing it. The NEET-PG 2026 — Information Bulletin (NBEMS) says that digital enhancement or other alterations or retouching are not permitted, and that selfies shall be rejected — and the webcam capture taken on the day shows what you really look like. If your photo is a selfie or needs a new background, have someone take a fresh one against a plain wall. The tool above only resizes and compresses the file you give it; it does not change the picture.
Making the signature image
The instruction is physical before it is digital: sign inside a box 1.5 cm (height) × 3.5 cm (width), in black or dark blue ink. The box gives the image a fixed proportion — 3.5 cm wide by 1.5 cm tall — and the bulletin asks you to keep that proportion when you resize, rather than stretching the scan to some other shape.
- Draw the box with a ruler; a hand-drawn box that drifts wider at one end becomes a crooked crop.
- Sign so the stroke fills the box without touching its edges.
- Scan or photograph the sheet flat, then crop to the inside of the box so the border lines do not appear in the upload.
Scanning the left thumb impression
The thumb file has the most precise instructions of the three. The bulletin asks for a left thumb impression inside a 3.5 cm × 1.5 cm box, and the scanner is set to 200 dpi. A box 3.5 cm wide by 1.5 cm tall scanned at that resolution produces a modest image, which is one reason this file is usually the easiest of the three to bring under the limit.
Press once, firmly, and lift straight up; a rolled or doubled print is the common fault. If you have no scanner, a phone photo taken square-on in good light works, but crop it to the box afterwards — the dpi setting only describes a scanner, and a phone image will need resizing to land near the same pixel size.
Common reasons a NEET-PG image is questioned
Exactly at the limit. A file that reads as the limit on your computer can be a few bytes over on the form’s count.
A distorted signature. Stretching the scan to fill some other frame breaks the box proportion the bulletin asks you to keep.
A face too small in the frame, or a photo that clearly does not match the webcam capture taken on the day.
A faint or smudged thumb print that survived compression but cannot be read.
The undergraduate medical entrance publishes very different bands, including a floor on every file — see the NEET UG page if you are helping a younger sibling. Other national exams are collected in the government exam photo guide.
