Etsy allows images up to 10 MB, but uploading photos that large is a mistake. Large images slow down your listing page, and Etsy recompresses them anyway — often with worse results than if you compressed them yourself. Aim for 300-500 KB per image for the best balance of quality and speed.
Etsy recommends 2000×2000 pixels minimum for product photos so buyers can use the zoom feature. Save your listing images at 2000×2000 to 3000×3000 pixels in JPEG at 80-85% quality. This typically produces files between 200-600 KB — well under the limit and fast to load.
For your listing thumbnail (the first image), quality matters most. This is what shoppers see in search results. Use JPEG at 85% quality and make sure the product is sharp and well-lit. The thumbnail displays at roughly 340×270 pixels on desktop search, so fine details below that size do not matter.
WebP format is supported in Etsy listings and produces 25-30% smaller files than JPEG at the same quality. However, if you also use your product photos on other marketplaces that may not support WebP, stick with JPEG for consistency.
