Defocus spreads each point of the scene into a disc, and the disc is the problem. A lens focuses one distance onto the sensor exactly; everything nearer or farther arrives as a small circle rather than a point, and the further off the distance, the wider the circle. Photographers call it the circle of confusion, and the band of distances where it stays small enough to look sharp is depth of field. That geometry is why a focus miss looks different from camera shake: the softness spreads outward in every direction rather than along a track, and it varies with distance across the frame instead of being uniform. The Cloud HD enhancer works with what the discs left behind.

A disc is harder to undo than a line. Shake mixes each pixel with its neighbours along one direction, so some independent information survives across the perpendicular one. Defocus mixes each pixel with everything around it, which destroys information faster for the same visual amount of softness. Faces are the part most worth trying anyway. Even where general recovery is limited, the face pass runs a model trained on faces alone, so a moderately soft face often gains more than the wall behind it. The restored face is checked against the one that arrived and pasted back under a face-shaped mask, so hair and clothing keep your pixels. How it works

  1. Confirm the camera was steady: Find something in the frame that is genuinely sharp. If some plane is crisp, this is a focus miss rather than shake, and the fix differs.
  2. Judge how far the focus missed: Zoom to 100% on the subject. If an eye or a letter is still discernible, a run is worth it. If everything has merged, it is not.
  3. Crop on your device, then upload: Trim to the subject first, then send a JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels for one Cloud HD run.
  4. Accept the ceiling if it is reached: Mild defocus lifts well and faces gain the most. A model that leaves a face untouched is declining, not failing.

Frequently asked questions

The background is sharp and my subject is not. What happened?
The autofocus locked onto a different distance from the one you wanted — a wall behind the person, a window frame, a bright highlight. The lens then did exactly what it was told. Everything sitting at the chosen distance is genuinely sharp, which proves the camera was steady and tells you the fault is placement rather than movement.
Can a badly out-of-focus photo be recovered at all?
Not meaningfully. Defocus spreads every point of the scene into a disc, and where the discs are wide they overlap so thoroughly that neighbouring details merge into one average. The enhancer improves mild softness convincingly and can lift a face out of moderate softness; a photograph where you cannot make out an eye is past the point where any model is recovering rather than inventing.
Is soft focus the same fault as being out of focus?
No. Soft focus is a lens or filter effect that spreads highlights while keeping the underlying structure in place, which is why it can look flattering. A focus miss removes the structure itself. The practical test is contrast in the fine detail: soft focus keeps edges present but low in contrast, defocus leaves no edge to find.
My phone focused on the glass instead of the person behind it. Anything to do?
Reflective and transparent surfaces confuse autofocus routinely, and the photo you have is focused on the glass, correctly. Run one pass and see whether the face improves enough for your purpose. If it does not, the honest answer is that the detail was never recorded — and a refused or failed run is not charged.
Should I crop into the soft area before uploading?
Cropping helps when it removes irrelevant sharp material and keeps the file under the 24-megapixel limit, because the whole budget goes to what you care about. It does not make the soft area any less soft — no crop adds information. Do it on your own device with the crop tool; that step never involves an upload.
