How it works

  1. Load the picture — JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels. It opens at full resolution for painting.
  2. Brush the region. Resize the brush, erase strokes, clear and start again — none of it leaves your browser until you run it.
  3. PowerPaint fills the painted region and returns a PNG at your original size. The run counts as one of the 10 HD runs in your month.

Erasing and filling are one move here, which is why the result is a photograph rather than a hole. In a conventional editor an eraser is destructive: it takes pixels away and leaves transparency, and the work of deciding what should be there instead falls to you and a clone stamp. This eraser hands that second half to a model. Your strokes define a region, the region is removed, and PowerPaint reads what surrounds it — the gradient of the sky above, the run of the fence on either side, the grain of the boards below — and paints in what that evidence implies. You get back a complete image at the same resolution, with every pixel outside your strokes exactly as it arrived.

There is no automatic detection, and that is a design decision rather than a gap. Auto-select is a pleasure when it agrees with you and a fight when it does not: it takes the shadow you wanted kept, stops at the edge of a strap you had not noticed, or merges the person with the railing they are leaning on. Each disagreement costs a run to discover. A brush has no opinions. Everything you cover goes; everything you leave stays; the selection is exactly as coarse or as careful as you chose to make it. In practice that means the skill on this page is masking, not prompting, and it repays the ordinary craft of working at high zoom with a small brush along the edges and a large one through the middle.

The mask lives at the photograph’s own resolution. You are not painting on a scaled-down proxy that gets stretched back up on our side, so a stroke laid between two fingers or along the top of a skirting board lands on those pixels and no others. When you run it, the mask travels as a small compressed image beside the photo, and the two are deleted together. Everything before that moment — loading the file, zooming, painting, erasing, changing your mind four times — happens in your browser with nothing sent anywhere at all, which is worth knowing if you are deciding whether to open a sensitive picture in it.

What it is for, and what it is not. Use it when one thing must go and the rest of the frame must survive untouched: the cases are set out under unwanted objects, people and the main object remover. Do not use it to lift a subject out of its background — that is a cutout, and the free on-device background remover does it in your browser with no upload and no run. The eraser is Cloud HD: Pro-only, opt-in, running on our GPU in the United States, with the photo and mask encrypted in transit, deleted when the run finishes and in all cases within 24 hours, and never used to train anything. Pro includes 150 runs a month on Monthly and 200 on Annual, of which 10 may be HD; erasing is HD, and a failed run is not charged.

Frequently asked questions

Does it find the object for me?
No. You paint the region and that is the selection, deliberately. Automatic detection is convenient right up to the moment it disagrees with you — grabbing a shadow you wanted, missing a strap you did not notice, or treating two touching objects as one. A brush never surprises you: what you covered is what goes, and everything else is returned untouched.
Is this the same as the eraser in an image editor?
No, and the difference is the whole point. An editor’s eraser deletes pixels and leaves a transparent hole for you to fill in some other way. This erases and rebuilds in one move: the model reads the scene surrounding your strokes and paints what was most plausibly behind them, so what comes back is a complete photograph rather than a photograph with a gap.
What can I actually do with the brush?
Change its size for broad areas or fine edges, add strokes anywhere in the frame, erase strokes you did not mean to make, and clear the whole mask to start again. Nothing is sent anywhere while you paint; the selection is built in your browser and only travels when you run it, alongside the photo, as a small compressed mask.
Does the brush work at the photo’s real resolution?
Yes. You are painting on the picture at its native size rather than on a downscaled preview, so a stroke you place along a railing lands on that railing to the pixel. That matters most at high zoom on small details — the gap between fingers, the join between a sign and its post — where a preview-resolution mask would round your intent into the wrong pixels.
What if I paint over more than I meant to?
Erase those strokes and repaint before running — nothing is spent until you start the run. If you only notice afterwards, the returned PNG is a new file and your original is untouched on your own disk, so you can simply mask again from the original. A slightly generous mask is usually harmless; a mask over a face or a logo is the one to pull back.
Why does an eraser need a server at all?
Because the filling is done by PowerPaint, an inpainting model far too large to ship into a browser. That makes it Cloud HD — Pro-only and opt-in — running on our GPU in the United States. The photo and mask are encrypted in transit, used once, deleted when the run finishes and in all cases within 24 hours, and never used to train anything.
