The model produces a plausible uniform, never a verified one. DDColor has no access to a service record, a regimental list or a date. It looks at grey values and shapes and predicts the colours that would most commonly produce them — which, on a figure in military dress, means it reaches for the broad family of khakis, olives and blue-greys that dominate the photographs it learned from. Those are frequently in the right area and occasionally exactly wrong, because field grey, khaki drill and olive drab can all record as very similar tones on period panchromatic film. A result that looks convincing carries no more evidential weight than one that looks odd; both are inferences, and the difference is only in how easily they are believed.

The small details are the ones that matter and the ones it cannot see. Cap badges, collar dogs, shoulder flashes, rank chevrons and above all medal ribbons occupy a few dozen pixels each, and a few dozen pixels of mid-grey contain no recoverable colour. Ribbon designs are the extreme case: they are defined entirely by an exact sequence of coloured stripes, several of which are indistinguishable in monochrome. Expect a ribbon-shaped smear of plausible colour and treat it as a placeholder. If you know the awards from the record, identify the ribbons properly and repaint them over the AI output, which is far quicker than colouring an entire portrait from grey. Wartime prints have specific damage, and colour does not touch it. Photographs carried in a wallet crease across the middle; ones stored in damp lofts show silver mirroring and foxing; ones cut down to fit a frame lose a corner. Colorization changes chroma and leaves the entire light-and-dark structure exactly as it found it, so every one of those marks returns in colour. Sequence the work: recover soft facial detail with the face restorer, take out a small stain or a frame mark with the object remover — it fills a brush-masked area back in, and works best on small regions with predictable surroundings — and colorize last. Trim the album card away first with the crop tool on your own device.

Label the output, and know where it went. A colorized service photograph circulates: it ends up on a memorial page, in a family tree, in a unit history. Write the label into the file name and the caption — colour added digitally, by an AI model, in the year you did it — so the next researcher does not inherit your inference as their fact. On the handling side, this is a Cloud HD tool: the photograph is uploaded to our server for that single run, encrypted in transit, processed in the United States, deleted when the run finishes and in all cases within 24 hours, and never used to train anything. How it works

  2. Scan the print at full detail: Small wartime prints hold badge and ribbon detail at 600 DPI that a quick phone snap loses entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Will the uniform be the correct shade for the branch and period?
Treat every shade as unverified. The model has no idea which army, which decade or which regiment it is looking at; it predicts a colour that fits the grey values and the shape of a uniform in general. Khaki, olive and field grey all photograph to similar tones on period film, so a plausible-looking result is not a sourced one.
What happens to cap badges, flashes and collar insignia?
They are usually too small to carry colour information at all. A few dozen pixels of mid-grey give the model nothing to reason from, so it fills them with something neutral or borrows from the surrounding cloth. If insignia matter for identification, work from the monochrome scan and colour those elements by hand against a reference.
Do medal ribbons come out right?
Almost never, and this is the detail most worth correcting. Ribbon designs are precise sequences of coloured stripes, and stripe colours that differ sharply in hue can be nearly identical in grey. Expect the model to produce a ribbon-shaped block of plausible colour. Identify the ribbons from the record, then repaint them.
How should I label a colorized service photograph?
Say that colour was added digitally, name the model and the year, and keep the monochrome original as the citable image. On a memorial page, a regimental history or a genealogy site, that single line prevents an inferred uniform shade from being read by the next researcher as documented fact.
Can it repair a damaged wartime print?
No. Colorization changes chroma only, so silver mirroring, a crease from a wallet, water stains and torn corners come back in colour, unchanged. The object remover can paint out a small mark over predictable surroundings, and the face restorer can recover soft facial detail, but neither of those is what this tool does.
