Enhance a Face in a PhotoPro, on our server

The face pass is a separate job from the clean-up, and it is deliberately narrow. After the whole photograph goes through a clean-up model, a detector looks for faces; each one it finds is cut out, restored by a model trained on faces specifically, checked against the version that arrived, and pasted back under a mask that follows the outline of the face rather than a box around it. Narrowness is the feature. A model given free rein over an entire portrait will happily redraw a hairline; a model confined to the skin inside a parsing mask cannot. The Cloud HD enhancer also never requires a face at all — a photograph with nobody in it simply gets the other passes.

Group photographs behave differently from portraits, and knowing that saves disappointment. Each face is treated on its own terms, so results within one frame vary honestly: the person nearest the camera gains a lot, the person at the back gains little, and a face turned too far away may be passed over entirely. That unevenness is the tool telling the truth about how much information each face carried. If a single person is what matters, crop tightly to them with the on-device crop tool before uploading, so the frame you send is mostly the face you care about.

Restoring a face is not the same as flattering one. Nothing here slims a jaw, whitens teeth, removes a blemish or applies the smoothing that phone beauty filters default to; the goal is the face that was in front of the lens, recovered from softness and noise. Faces are personal data, so the handling is stated in full. Cloud HD is Pro-only and opt-in: your photograph is uploaded to our server for that run and deleted when the run finishes, and in all cases within 24 hours. It is processed in the United States on Cloudflare R2 storage and Modal GPUs, encrypted in transit, and never used to train anything — no face you send teaches any model. The model that ran is named on the result; today it is RestoreFormer++, the model can change, and you can always see which one ran. One enhancement is a single general run, and a failed run is not charged.

How it works

  1. Crop to the people, not the room: Trim on your own device first so more of the megapixel budget sits on the faces you care about. No upload is involved in cropping.
  2. Upload the best copy you own: JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels. A forwarded chat copy has already lost the fine detail faces are rebuilt from.
  3. Let each face get its own pass: Faces are detected, restored, checked against your original and pasted back under a face-shaped mask. The whole frame is cleaned up too.
  4. Inspect each face at 100%: Look at eyes, teeth and the hairline on every person, not just the one you care about. A face left unchanged is the model declining, not failing.

Frequently asked questions

There are six people in the photo. Does it fix all of them?
Every face the detector finds gets its own pass, so a group shot is handled face by face rather than as one average. Faces at the front, large and well lit, improve the most; someone half-turned at the back of the room improves least. The rest of the frame still gets the whole-photo clean-up regardless.
How does it avoid changing hair, glasses and clothing?
The restored face is pasted back under a mask that follows the face outline rather than a rectangle, so the boundary lands on skin instead of cutting through a fringe or a collar. Hair, ears, spectacle frames beyond the face edge, necks and clothes keep your original pixels. That is what stops a restored portrait looking like a face stuck onto a body.
How small can a face be before it is hopeless?
A face a few dozen pixels across gives the model almost nothing to anchor on, and a rebuilt one at that size is a guess wearing a familiar shape. There is no exact threshold, but the practical rule is that if you cannot tell who it is at 100%, a model is unlikely to settle the question for you. Crop and judge before you decide.
Does it work on side profiles and partly hidden faces?
Frontal faces are what these models see most in training and they do best there. A strong profile, a face behind a hand or a microphone, or one lit hard from the side is a harder case — sometimes the detector finds it and improves it modestly, sometimes it passes over it entirely and the face is simply left as it arrived.
Can I use the result as a profile picture or an ID photo?
For a profile picture, yes. For an official document, be careful: some authorities forbid retouched or reconstructed images, and a restored face is a reconstruction. Crop and frame on your own device, keep the untouched original, and check the rules of whoever is receiving it before you submit a processed photograph.
