Flipping an image produces its mirror reflection: horizontally, so left and right swap as if the photo were seen in a mirror, or vertically, so top and bottom swap as if reflected in still water. Whether you searched for "flip image" or "mirror image", the operation is the same one and this is the tool for it — two toggles, a live preview that updates as you switch, and an export at the image's full native resolution. Every pixel is moved to its mirrored position exactly; nothing is resampled, interpolated, cropped, or scaled.
The whole thing runs in your browser through the Canvas API. The photo you drop in is decoded on your device, mirrored on your device, and re-encoded on your device — it never uploads, which is worth having for the photos people most often flip: selfies, family pictures, ID-adjacent shots.
The mirror selfie problem
The most common reason anyone mirrors a photo: front-camera selfies. Phone cameras show you a mirrored preview — because that is how you see yourself in mirrors, and an un-mirrored live preview feels alien — but cameras differ on what they save. Some store the mirrored view, some store the true view, and some make it a setting. The result is the familiar surprise: the saved selfie looks subtly "wrong", and any text in frame — a t-shirt, a shop sign, a whiteboard — reads backwards. One horizontal flip here restores it. The deeper reason the flipped version looks strange to you (and normal to everyone else) is that faces are not symmetric: you know your face from mirrors, while the rest of the world knows the un-mirrored version, so each side finds the other's view slightly off.
Flipping for print transfers
Iron-on t-shirt transfers, water-slide decals, screen-print films, and some direct-to-garment workflows all need the artwork mirrored before printing, because the transfer is applied face-down: the printed sheet flips when it meets the fabric, and a design printed un-mirrored comes out backwards on the shirt. The rule is simple — if the process presses the printed face against the destination, flip horizontally first. Do it as the last step before export, after any text or logos are final, and double-check lettering in the preview: text is the part that makes a forgotten flip obvious and expensive.
Flip is not rotate
The two get conflated because both "turn the image around", but they are geometrically different operations. Rotation turns the image about its centre and preserves handedness — a clock rotated 180° is upside down, but its hands still run clockwise. A flip is a reflection: it reverses handedness, which is exactly why text becomes unreadable and why a flipped face looks subtly different. No amount of rotation reproduces a flip, and vice versa. One useful identity connects them: flipping horizontally and vertically in the same pass is identical to rotating 180° — this tool lets you switch on both toggles at once, so an upside-down scan can be fixed here too. For 90° corrections and arbitrary angles, use the rotate tool instead.
Before you post: the mirrored-text check
A flip touches every pixel, so scan the preview for anything with a defined orientation before saving: text and logos first, but also watch faces (a mole switches sides), buttoned shirts (men's buttons sit on the wearer's right), wedding rings, wristwatches, car steering wheels, and writing on signs deep in the background. For product photos and e-commerce listings, flipping is riskier than it looks — packaging text reverses, and a mirrored product shot can misrepresent the physical item. When the goal is just a better composition, consider whether a crop gets you there without reversing anything. On export you can keep the original format or switch between JPEG, PNG, and WebP, with a quality control for the lossy formats — the flip itself moves pixels without inventing new ones, so any quality change comes from the encoder settings you choose, not from the mirroring.
