Compress Images for eBay Listings — Free, Fast & Private
eBay’s published photo rules leave a lot of room, and that is exactly why sellers get them wrong in both directions:
- Minimum 500 × 500 px — below this the photo is refused outright.
- Maximum 9000 × 9000 px, and 12 MB per photo.
- Recommended about 1600 × 1600 px — and at 1600 px or larger on the longest side, eBay switches on the zoom feature that lets buyers magnify detail.
- Accepted formats include JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP and non-animated GIF. A 1:1 or 16:9 shape displays best across listings, search results and other placements.
Why 1600 is the number, not 9000
Zoom is the feature that sells worn, used and collectable items — it is how a buyer inspects a scuff, a hallmark, a serial number or the condition of a spine. It requires 1600 px, and it does not get better above it: the gallery is displaying a scaled version either way.
Uploading a 6000 px photograph therefore buys you nothing a 1600 px one does not already have, while costing you upload time on every listing and slower gallery loads for buyers — disproportionately mobile buyers, who are most of them. Sellers listing dozens of items a week feel this most: the difference between 1600 px and straight-from-the-camera files is minutes per listing. On the content side, eBay's picture guidelines have long recommended plain, uncluttered backdrops — if a shot needs one after the fact, the white background product photo workflow gets you there before you compress.
The 500px floor and the crop trap
The minimum bites in one specific situation: heavy cropping. Photograph an item, crop tightly to show a small defect, and the crop can easily land under 500 px on a side — at which point eBay refuses it. Shoot closer instead of cropping harder, or crop from a higher-resolution original so the result still clears the floor.
Square is the safest shape. Listing thumbnails and search results are square-ish, and a 16:9 landscape photo of a small item wastes most of the thumbnail on background, which reads as a less professional listing next to competitors.
Batch the whole listing at once
eBay allows a generous number of photos per listing and using them is worth real money on used goods. That makes per-photo fiddling unrealistic. Drop all twelve shots in at once, set JPEG, Smart and 1600px, and export the set — each one lands in the low hundreds of kilobytes, well inside the 12 MB ceiling, with zoom enabled on every image.
