Remove Scratches from a Scanned PhotoPro, on our server

Two different models, two different kinds of damage, and it matters which you reach for. A faded face is missing detail everywhere across a region the model has learned the general shape of, which is why face restoration can rebuild it convincingly and check the result against the person in your original. A scratch is the opposite: nothing is faded, a narrow strip is simply gone, and everything needed to replace it sits a few pixels to either side. That is a painting problem with a mask, and it is what this page runs. The restorer will not touch a scratch, on purpose — a tool that quietly invented emulsion would stop being a record of your print.

Scan once, well, and work on the scan. 600 DPI for a small print, 300 for anything above postcard size, glass clean, print flat, lid closed to kill reflections. Crop the scanner bed off with the free on-device crop tool before you upload anything, and keep the raw scan as an untouched master that every later version descends from. A photograph of a print taken with a phone also works — square on, in soft daylight, no flash, no glare across the gloss — but a flatbed shows the scratch as a cleaner line, and a cleaner line makes a narrower mask, and a narrower mask reconstructs better. The 25 MB and 24 megapixel ceilings are generous enough for a 600 DPI scan of an ordinary family print.

Mask the shoulder, not only the line. Under a scanner a scratch reads as a bright core with a softer dark margin either side where the emulsion lifted, and it is the margin that betrays a lazy mask: fill only the core and a pale ghost of the whole scratch remains, running exactly where the damage was. Brush a band two or three times the visible width, follow the line all the way to the picture edge, and put every scratch, crease, silverfish trail and pen mark into the same mask, because one mask is one run whatever it contains. The exception worth making by hand is a scratch crossing an eye or a mouth: leave that short section unpainted and let the face model deal with it, since an invented eye is the one artefact nobody forgives.

Order of operations, and what happens to the file. Clean the damage first, restore the faces second, add colour third if the print is black and white, and enlarge last on your own device. Each step hands the next a simpler picture, and only the first three involve an upload at all. Stains and foxing are a related but separate mask, covered on stain removal; broad softness and noise across a whole scan is not a mask job at all and belongs to the photo enhancer; a pen mark, a drawing pin or a strip of tape across the print is ordinary work for the object remover. How it works

  1. Scan the print properly first: Flatbed at 600 DPI for a small print, 300 DPI for a large one. Crop the scanner bed away with the on-device crop tool before uploading.

  3. Band over every scratch and crease: Brush wider than the damage, follow each line to the edge of the frame, and put every mark into the same mask.
  4. Then restore the faces: Take the cleaned PNG to the face restorer, which is the model trained to rebuild features — never the other way round.

Frequently asked questions

Doesn’t the photo restorer already repair damage like this?
No, and that is a deliberate boundary. The restorer rebuilds faces that decades of fading have softened; it does not paint over tears, stains or scratches, and damage outside the faces comes back exactly as it arrived. Physical damage is a painting job with a mask, which is this page. Two tools, two problems, and neither pretends to be the other.
How should I mask a hairline scratch that runs the length of the print?
As one continuous band, wider than the scratch, following its whole path from edge to edge. A scan usually shows a scratch as a bright line with a soft darker shoulder on each side, and a mask cut to the bright core alone leaves those shoulders behind as a ghost. Carry the stroke off the edge of the picture rather than stopping short of it.
Does the same thing work on a crease or a fold line?
Yes, with one caution. A fold is wider than a scratch and often carries lost emulsion along its spine, so it is a medium mask rather than a thin one, and the fill has more to invent. Where a crease crosses plain background it closes convincingly; where it crosses a patterned dress or a hedge you will see the reconstruction if you look at full resolution.
A scratch runs straight across someone’s eye. What happens there?
The model will fill it, and it will be a guess about a face. Skin and hair reconstruct reasonably; an eye is small, high-contrast and unique to that person, so an invented one rarely looks like them. Remove the scratch everywhere except across the eye, then run the face restorer on the result — rebuilding faces is what that model is actually trained for.
What if the print has a missing corner or a hole through it?
That is beyond honest reconstruction. A missing area has no evidence anywhere in the image about what it contained, so anything filled there is invention presented as photograph. Small losses in plain sky or a blank wall are reasonable to close. A hole through a group of people is not, and we would rather say so than sell you a run for it.
Where is the scan processed and how long is it kept?
Scratch removal is Cloud HD: Pro-only, opt-in, processed on our GPU in the United States because PowerPaint cannot run in a browser. The scan and your mask are encrypted in transit, used for the single run, and deleted when the run finishes and in all cases within 24 hours. They are never used to train anything, and a failed run is not charged.
