Compress Signature for Exam Forms (10-30 KB)

By Gaurav Bhowmick

Most Indian government exam forms require a scanned signature between 10-30 KB in JPEG format with specific pixel dimensions. Here is exactly how to get it right the first time.

Common signature requirements. SSC: 10-30 KB, 140×60 pixels, JPEG. IBPS: 10-20 KB, 140×60 pixels, JPEG. UPSC: 20 KB max, variable dimensions. RRB NTPC: 10-30 KB, 140×60 pixels. The pattern is clear — most forms want a small JPEG under 30 KB at roughly 140×60 pixels.

Step 1: Scan or photograph correctly. Sign on plain white paper with a black or dark blue pen. Photograph in good lighting from directly above, or scan at 200 DPI. Crop tightly around the signature — leave minimal white space. The less background, the smaller the final file.

Step 2: Resize to required dimensions. Open your image in any tool and resize to the required pixel dimensions (typically 140×60). This single step often gets the file close to the target size because you are dramatically reducing the pixel count.

Step 3: Compress to target size. If the file is still too large after resizing, compress it. A tool like MiniPx lets you set a target file size (e.g., 20 KB) and compresses to exactly that. Save as JPEG — PNG signatures are usually larger because the anti-aliased edges of handwriting create many unique pixel values.

Why signatures are tricky. Unlike photos, signatures have high-contrast edges (dark ink on white paper) that do not compress as efficiently in JPEG. The artefacts around sharp edges are also more visible. That is why the required quality is lower (60-75% JPEG quality is normal for these uploads) — the forms are designed for it.

Pro tip: save your final signature file with a clear name like signature_140x60_20kb.jpg and keep it. Most government exam forms across SSC, IBPS, and RRB use the same specifications, so you can reuse it for multiple applications.

Frequently asked questions

Should I upload my signature as PNG or JPEG?
JPEG unless the form specifically asks for PNG. JPEG files are smaller at the same visual quality for signatures, and most government forms require JPEG format.
My signature file is showing as 1 KB after compression. Is that okay?
Probably too small. At 1 KB the image quality is extremely degraded and may be rejected. Aim for the middle of the allowed range — if the form says 10-30 KB, target 15-20 KB.
Can I use a digital signature drawn on a phone?
Most government exam forms require a scanned image of a physical handwritten signature. Digital signatures drawn on screens may be rejected. Check the specific form instructions.
What if my signature is too light after compression?
Use a thicker pen and increase contrast before compressing. You can also adjust brightness and contrast in an image editor to make the ink darker before resizing and compressing.
