Photo Size Requirements for Indian Government Forms

By Gaurav Bhowmickยทยท7 min read

Every Indian government form has its own photo and signature specifications โ€” different file sizes, different dimensions, different formats. Get any one of them wrong and the portal rejects your upload. This guide covers all the major forms in one place.

Photo requirements by form

Below are the typical specifications. These can change between application cycles, so always verify against the official notification for your specific form.

How to compress for any government form

Step 1 โ€” Take a proper photo. Use a white background, face the camera directly, and ensure your face fills about 60-70% of the frame. Phone cameras are fine โ€” just use good lighting and avoid selfie angles.

Step 2 โ€” Pick the right MiniPx tool. For 50KB targets (SSC, IBPS, Railway, PAN), use Compress to 50KB. For UPSC or Passport with larger limits, the Compress to 100KB tool gives better quality.

Step 3 โ€” Set format to JPEG. All Indian government portals require JPEG format. If your photo is PNG or HEIC (common with iPhones), MiniPx will convert it automatically when you select JPEG output.

Step 4 โ€” Verify and download. Check the output file size against the form requirements. If it is still too large, try the Tiny preset or reduce the dimensions. Download and upload to the portal.

Signature compression tips

Signatures need special attention because the file size limits are tight (typically 10-20KB) and legibility matters. Sign on clean white paper with a black or dark blue pen. Use thick, clear strokes.

Photograph or scan the signature with even lighting. Crop tightly around the signature โ€” extra white space increases file size without adding value. In MiniPx, use the Tiny preset with JPEG format and set max width to 300-400 pixels.

Common mistakes that cause rejection

  • Wrong format: Submitting PNG when the portal requires JPEG. Use Convert PNG to JPG to fix this.
  • File too large: Phone cameras produce 3-8MB files. Government forms need 20-300KB. Always compress before uploading.
  • Wrong dimensions: Some portals check exact pixel dimensions. Use the passport size resizer for standard dimensions.
  • Non-white background: Coloured or outdoor backgrounds are rejected. Retake the photo against a plain white wall.
  • Over-compression: If the file is too small, quality drops below acceptable levels. Stay within the specified range, not below it.

Why use MiniPx for government forms

Government form photos are identity documents. They contain your face, and if EXIF data is present, they may reveal your GPS location, phone model, and the time the photo was taken. Uploading these to a random compression website sends all of that data to unknown servers.

MiniPx processes everything in your browser. Your photos and signatures never leave your device. It also strips EXIF metadata automatically, removing location and device information from the output file. For identity documents, this is the only approach that makes sense.

Frequently asked questions

What photo size do most Indian government forms require?
Most government forms require a JPEG photo between 20KB and 50KB with passport-style dimensions (3.5 x 4.5 cm or approximately 200 x 230 pixels). UPSC is an exception with a larger allowance of up to 300KB. Always check the specific notification for your form as requirements vary.
How do I compress my signature to under 20KB?
Use MiniPx with the Tiny preset and JPEG format. Set the max width to 300-400 pixels. Sign on clean white paper with a dark pen, photograph it with even lighting, and upload to MiniPx. The result will be a clear signature well under 20KB.
What background colour is required for government form photos?
Most Indian government forms require a white or plain light background. UPSC, SSC, and IBPS all specify white backgrounds. Avoid patterned, coloured, or outdoor backgrounds. The photo should be a recent passport-style headshot.
Can I use a phone camera photo for government forms?
Yes, phone cameras work well. Use the rear camera in good natural light, stand against a white wall, and have someone else take the photo at arm's length. The photo will be much larger than needed โ€” use MiniPx to compress and resize it to the required dimensions.
Why does the government portal keep rejecting my photo?
Common reasons: wrong file format (use JPEG, not PNG), file size outside the required range, wrong pixel dimensions, or the image is corrupted. Use MiniPx to convert to JPEG, compress to the exact target size, and resize to the specified dimensions. Also make sure the background is plain white.
