File Size Limits for Every Platform in 2026 — Complete Reference

Every platform has different upload limits. This is the reference page — bookmark it. All limits verified as of May 2026.

Email

Gmail: 25 MB per attachment. Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail): 25 MB; the Outlook app caps a message at 20 MB for internet accounts, and Exchange (work) accounts default to 10 MB. Yahoo Mail: 25 MB. ProtonMail: 25 MB. Apple Mail (iCloud): 20 MB. For larger files, all these services suggest cloud storage links instead.

Social media

Instagram: its Help Center does not publish a photo file-size limit; it sizes anything wider than 1080 pixels down to 1080. Facebook: link-preview images must not exceed 8 MB; other photo limits are not published. Twitter/X: 5 MB for photos. LinkedIn: 8 MB for a profile photo or banner, 3 MB for company-page logo and cover images; a post-image limit is not published. Pinterest: 20 MB. Reddit: 20 MB for images, 100 MB for GIFs. Discord: 20 MB (free, raised from 10 MB in August 2026), 50 MB (Nitro Basic), up to 1 GB (Nitro). To keep a picture inside the free allowance, compress it for Discord in your browser first.

Messaging apps

WhatsApp: 16 MB for images (documents up to 2 GB). Telegram: 2 GB. iMessage: 100 MB. Signal: 100 MB. Slack: 1 GB per file (free plan has total storage limits).

Government forms (India)

UPSC: Photo 20–300 KB at 550-1000 px, signature 20–300 KB at 350-500 px — and note that UPSC wants a triple signature, three signatures scanned as one image. SSC: the photo is captured live through the webcam during the application, so only the signature is uploaded, 10–20 KB. IBPS: Photo 20–50 KB, Signature 10–20 KB. Railway (RRB): the photo is captured live too; the signature is 30–49 KB. Aadhaar update: Photo under 2 MB. PAN card (NSDL): Photo 2-20 KB, Signature 2-10 KB.

Cloud storage and websites

Google Drive: 5 TB per file. Dropbox: 2 GB per file (web), 50 GB (desktop). WordPress: 2-64 MB (depends on hosting). Shopify: 20 MB per image. Etsy: 1 MB per listing photo. Squarespace: 20 MB.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common file size limit?

Most platforms fall in the 5-25 MB range. Social media limits are often unpublished, and where they are published they run 2-8 MB for photos (X 5 MB, LinkedIn 8 MB, Facebook link images 8 MB). Government forms in India are the strictest: UPSC asks for 20–300 KB, IBPS for a 20–50 KB photo and a 10–20 KB signature, and a PAN card photo for 2-20 KB.

Do these limits apply to all file types or just images?

The limits listed are general upload limits. Some platforms have separate limits for different file types — for example, WhatsApp allows 16 MB for images but up to 2 GB for documents.

What if my file is over the limit?
